Infected Syren
We were recently contacted by UK/Cyprus based Infected Syren, to let us know about their tracks and demo which has recently been completed. Offering the demo up for free (simply send them an email on [email protected] quoting ‘gimme a fuckin demo’…..simple!), this punk/metal/whatever style band are out there creating sick music for sick people, drawing influence from the likes of The Exploited, Overkill and the Sex Pistols, in between spending their time hula hooping whilst peeing and chasing midgets. Given all of this information and the ensuing confusion which I felt, I figured I’d just hit play and see what the music was like!
Opening with SyK there’s a real mix of sounds going on, adopting a cross between metal and punk which somehow forms a sound which is heavy whilst also being jumpy and fun. Roving between these two approaches results in a track which verges on the slightly ‘off piste’ at some points, but largely leads to a sound which is going to get you moving, get you involved and make you want to play this really, really loud. Add in a catchy chorus to proceedings and it’s hard to explain, but this is one hell of a great track, the sort of track which you want to see live as quite simply, you know it’s going to be great fun!
Leading on to Un-Normal the off piste approach continues, this time launching into another jumpy melee of guitars, roving bass and hammering drum lines. Adding a sense of funk to proceedings this time around, this is another track which you can well imagine being well received on the live scene, it’s got the right mix of heavy and groove which is going to get people moving. Once again the vocals rotate between high noted singing and more conventional ‘rock’ style vocals, all the time telling a tale which keeps you listening, wanting to hear what’s going to come next. The Torture Brothers continues this theme as it comes into being, once again opening with a hard hitting and funky front whilst a sludgy and raw bass line pounds away in the background. Heavy once again without becoming over bearing or over the top, this is another track which gets you thinking about the varied style of the band. I think what’s been most striking here is that the band don’t sound like anyone else, their sound is their own and yet it sounds familiar, like you should have been listening to it for years already!
Closing with Infected Cyrcus (as an Outro) there’s a final insight into the thoughts of the band provided, almost presenting us with a circus like melee of bass heavy undertones and strange progressions. The final moments of this demo are perhaps the most haunting of the album, the track forming around you and creating a chaotic sense of child like fun, somehow creating a musical nightmare which works to close the album, leaving you with a serious taste for the band and wondering what’s going to happen next!
I love the slightly out there approach of Infected Syren, they appear to be a band who aren’t afraid to try new things, work on their own style and create tracks which they, rather than others, want them to create. There are moments on this album which I questioned when I heard it, but over all it’s one of those records which you know is going to get people talking, get people involved, and get you out to one of their shows.
