Kataplexy
We were recently sent through a copy of the 2012 promo album from Kataplexy, made up of three songs designed to showcase the brutal heavy style of the band. Based in Chicago (an awesome city indeed!), the idea behind the three tracks was to give the fans and death metal community an idea of what the band want to sound like and accomplish in the scene, something they are continuing to push with their live shows and recordings. Describing their sound as extreme metal/death metal/extreme hockey metal, I was looking forward to seeing what was going on from this Chicago 4 piece.
Please note – the order of the tracks in the review does not necessarily represent the order of the tracks on the record, but instead the order in which they downloaded onto my hard drive.
A Facial Detachment was the first track I came to, opening with a roaring vocal line accompanied by guitars, bass and drums straight out of the death metal handbook. The mix here is heavy sure, but there’s also a sense of accessibility built into things, allowing the mix to be the sort of thing you can listen to without feeling the need to trash the place, although there were moments when I came close. This track is the sort of thing that is going to get extreme pits going, the sort of thing that is impossible to resist on the live scene, and the sort of thing you know is going to keep you listening until the band are done and finished with you – a quality start to things for sure.
Opening Consumed For Companionship with a spoken line about cannibalism, this track once again returns us to the guttural vocals, roaring guitar lines and roving bass rhythms, all backed up by insane drumming and a real sense of fear. This track seems to hold even more venom and malice than the previous track, showing that these guys are by no means done and that there’s a hell of a lot more to come from them. Personally, of the three tracks, this was my favourite – there’s something about it which made me want to get out to a show, get in a pit and go mental whilst these guys blast out their wares – definitely a track to make sure you check out.
Closing with Improper Disposal we’re left on another heavy and powerful note, closing the demo with pounding drums, rumbling bass, and vocals which are going to tear your face off and make you thank them for the honour. This closing track once again focuses on the speed and intricacies of death metal in its truest form, offering us an insight into the sort of sound the band are capable of and presenting us with further reasons why we need to be paying attention to them – Kataplexy are here, and they’re ready to fuck you up.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love heavy. Kataplexy are heavy, and I mean proper heavy – so by association, I think I’m going to like what’s going on here. All three of the tracks on offer here show us a slightly different approach to their music, all the time letting you know that this is serious stuff, but allowing enough melody to enjoy it. If you like raw, powerful and heavy music, make sure you check these guys out – you don’t be disappointed.
