Kernow King and Kernuyck - Take 2...
Following on from the success of Pasties, our very own Kernow King has once again joined forces with Cornish band Kernuyck to put together another track in their unique stylings. This time taking their lead from none other than Guns N Roses and their classic Welcome To The Jungle, ladies and gentlemen, I give you Welcome To The Kernow!
There's not a lot which needs to be said about this track, other than the suggestion that perhaps these two forces need to join together to record a full length album. The track itself reflects the heavy assed style which so many have come to love courtesy of Kernuyck, accompanied by the comedic lyrics of the Kernow King himself. I for one found myself giggling like a school girl for the majority of the track, the guys changing the lyrics to incorporate lines like 'we've got maids and ale' and 'you're a very Cornish maid'. The key difference here is that there's no video to accompany the track, instead allowing you to create your own in your mind, also just allowing you to sit back and enjoy the track.
Sure, this is a comedy track - but it's done damned well once again. The Kernuyck boys know how to play their stuff and handle the Slash written GnR riffs with aplomb, the drumming elevated beyond that of the original and the bass echoing out as more of a ominous rumble before throwing in the Kernow Kings lyrics.
My one complaint - KK goes on to name a load of Cornish towns towards the end of the track, but at no point does he mention St Columb Major where I'm based - I mean, I know it's not the most amazing place in the world, but come on, a little recognition please!
I follow the Kernow King on FB (HERE) as well as the guys in Kernuyck, and am always looking out for new projects, What they've achieved here is a track which isn't just an amusing 5 minutes or so, it's actually a well put together song. I personally think they need to put their heads together and release a charity album - based on both their popularities it would certainly sell! I'll be heading down to check out Kernuyck with Mad Hatter 2.0 and Cambion on the 16th of March so if I get a chance to chat with the guys, I'll suggest it, but for now, just kick back and enjoy!

Kernow King and Kernuyck
The Kernow King has gained quite a name for himself around the UK now for promoting all of the wonderful things Cornwall has to offer from pasties, stripy coats, different jobs through to dogging, he’s taken them all on to help raise their profile. Progression though is of course inevitable, so our very own Kernow King has joined forces with the mighty Kernuyck (who we featured not long ago on the site) and recorded their own version of the Presidents of the USA classic, Peaches. In true South-Western fashion though, the song title has been changed to Pasties to celebrate the wonderful pastry.
Filmed on location in Cornwall, the accompanying video opens with a shot of the man himself stood on the front of a rowing gig with the Falmouth Ladies Rowing Team. This serene shot soon fades into Roche Rock and Kernuyck as his backing band. The song itself remains much the same as the original version, sticking to much the same pace and tempo but adding in an extra level of distortion courtesy of the metal roots of the band. The King himself sings on the track, telling tales of Pasties, his origin and an unfortunate mishap which one day took place when an overly warm piece of meat fell from his beloved pasty into his lap, for the lads out there I’m sure you can understand his predicament! What’s really striking though is the harmony which has been created between he and the band, forming a unity so often only seen from a well established band. Testament to this is the final section of the song where the vocals are all layered adding a further dimension to the track.
Notable moments from the track include the King jumping from the rowing gig into the ocean in a pair of speedos, the solo which Kernuyck have managed to incorporate into the song and of course, the final section of the track when the double bass pedal adds a whole new approach to a once relatively chilled out track.
Some might look at this track as a bit of a laugh or a piss take, but personally I can see this doing incredibly well as a charity single or similar. I’m in the process of trying to organise a charity gig down this way next summer and would love to get the King to make an appearance and maybe throw out a rendition of Pasties with the Kernuyck boys, but we’ll see! For now though, hopefully by posting this on here with the video below (make sure you watch it!), we can help to spread the word not only about our beloved Kernow King, but also about the staple food stuff that is the pasty! (And whilst we’re on that note, if you’re the person in Devon who made the one I had a while back which had peas in it, seriously, sort your act out!
