Kill To Gain
Kill to Gain, a 5 piece band from Keighley in Yorkshire, are somewhat hard to pin down in terms of genre. With some tracks offering a prog rock feel, others will blow you away with a full-on thrash metal attack – a refreshing burst of unpredictability. The band sent over a couple of their new tracks, ready to unleash on the public.
Starting with an unusual intro that seems reminiscent of a 1950’s radio jingle, Nothing Left suddenly throws you into a scream and a heavy rift before just as abruptly slowing down for a melodic verse in a matter that brings comparisons with Dream Theater. This back and forth continues throughout the song, with a heavy chorus punctuating the slow, melancholic verses. The overall effect is a well-balanced track, an anguished cry being released in the heavy hitting chorus.
Forsaken begins with punk-influenced guitar riffs before moving into more familiar thrash metal territory. Evoking memories of early Trivium albums, this track starts off heavy – and stays there. Mixing clean vocals with heavy metal grows, a catchy chorus and fast-paced riffs, this is bound to be a fan favourite. Vocalist Chris Hey cries out at the end of the track “Don’t you walk away” – with tracks like this it’ll be difficult to do so.
Two very different tracks, with unique styles for both. Special mention has to go to the guitarists Martin Hey & Haydon Dobson for switching between genres to create a feel of individuality with each track. The band show great promise and innovation, and if they can keep this up then they’ve a strong future ahead.
