Kimbra
Kimbra Johnson Zottola is 22 yrs old from Hamilton, New Zealand, this artist has now called Melbourne home for 3 yrs.
She was signed to Warner Bros. Records last year 2011, and catapulted into the Australia’s musical arena. She has released 5 of her own singles and 4 collaborations, her most notorious being international No.1 with Goyte - ‘Somebody that I used to know’
Grand Prize Winner of the International Songwriting Competition 2011,Voted ‘One to Watch 2012’ by Rolling Stone and. APRA 2012 Song of the Year Award winner for ‘Cameo Lover’ off her album ‘Vows’ released here in 2011. ARIA Best Female Artist of the Year 2011. Quite the accomplished and celebrated young musician already.
I caught her show at Metro’s City Perth on Mon 21st May, supported by Daniel Merriweather, this show was the last for a while on Australian soil, on the eve of her debut album launch of ‘Vows’ in the states. Kimbra headed straight to the US that night to tour with Foster the People.
Kimbra performed for 1½ hrs in front of a varied demographic. Her audience made up of all ages, were well acquainted with her material. Her band consisted of guitars, keys, drums and backing vocalists. Kimbra entered the stage in a extrovert outfit, and the biggest smile, that never left her face for the majority of the show. She has found her place in life, on stage performing and she a joy to watch. Kimbra is an enthusiastic artist, dancing and laughing, her energy is infectious. Vocally she has maturity beyond her years, she sings beautifully and confidently. Even through her costume change malfunction, the fact she nearly lost her skirt, amused her and the crowd, without fazing anyone.
Her material, which she writes herself and arranges, is performed live, every bit as well as it is produced in the studio. Her songs are unique with classic influences. Lyrically the songs are written from a deeply personal prospective. Within her 14 song set, Kimbra sang a Nina Simone cover ‘Plain Gold Ring’ with her own spin. Her vocals were powerful and flawless, delivered with the type of passion that made it her own. Kimbra’s musical roots must have included, quality Jazz, Blues, Soul and Dance music from several eras, as the rhythms and influence present in different measures throughout her music. This show had just the right combination of show and gig qualities, it was a visually colourful and animated show, with talented musicians creating great music. The set finished with her award winning hit ‘Cameo Lover’ to massive support and applause. She is not afraid to experiment musically and vocally, that makes the future very bright for Kimbra and music lovers because you will never know what you’ll get next.
