Know Lyfe
Alfonso of Know Lyfe was good enough to get in touch with some tracks which they’ve produced. Intrigued by the name of the band I thought I’d have a listen to see what the music was like!
Babel opened my eyes as soon as I hit play, the sound is enormous! Roaring yet clean vocals rove around at first before taking on a full roar, guitars are heavy and backed by bass which gives the track an extra depth and the drums create a solid beat which powers the track onwards. As you listen to the track it’s amazing how well produced it is but mostly how massive the sound is, the guitar sound which backs the whole thing is on permanent over drive – what a way to kick proceedings off! Unrelentingly heavy yet melodic up until the final seconds this track is one which will stay on my play list for a long time to come!
As the track reaches its finale and Dixie Cup Dean kicks in, everything changes for a moment. Electronic noises open the track creating a sense of expectation yet almost concern for what is to follow, then it all kicks off! Roaring vocals match a funky guitar lick whilst a drum beat alternates between pacey and fast creating a mash up of sounds which work on so many levels, the track is melodic, emotional and heavy all at once. Throwing in a solo midway through the band show they’re out to prove themselves, and prove it they do. Ephysians soon kicks in and changes everything though, slamming drums back distorted riffs whilst the vocals take on a screamed edge, the contrast created at first is one which will make you sit back and question what the hell is going on. Somehow melodic whilst being insanely heavy this track is a true triumph and quite possibly my own personal favourite from the selection which they sent through to me.
Kobra Kai kicks in as Ephysians fades out, launching onwards with one hell of a riff and backing it up with rolling drums. As the vocals kick in the guitars take on a sludgy pumping edge creating an almost jumpy sound behind the vocals. The vocals are deceptively clean on this track which at first doesn’t seem to match the level of distortion in the music, but after a second or two you’ll find yourself once again full immersed in the track. As it fades out and Oceans kicks in everything is slowed down a notch into an almost Hoobastank like aura. Clean vocals back the solid guitar line and simple yet effective drum beat to create a sound which pulls you in and makes you listen. Kicking into a catchy chorus backed by some distorted guitars and lead lines the track suddenly fully takes form and you’re presented with what can only be described as a potential rock anthem in the waiting. Live I imagine this track is a triumph, it seems to have all of the right ingredients right there.
Final track She Wore A Crown follows on in a similar way at first before kicking into roared vocals over a reasonably laid back guitar line. This track seems to contrast against itself creating a track which presents heaviness and melodies all at once. Bringing those clean vocals back in to hammer home the chorus of the track this is another example of pure downright catchiness from Know Lyfe, something I’ve grown to love since being sent their tracks.
Know Lyfe are perfect for the scene as I see it at the moment, we need bands like this. They’ve got the melodic edge which will bring new people in whilst having enough heaviness to keep even the most die hard fans going. Their tracks are heavy yet catchy, melodic yet disjointed at times, all the time pushing new boundaries with the sound to ensure it never sounds the same as the last track. I want to hear a lot more from these guys – so get writing!
