Last Transmission
Garry from SAN PR is always pretty good at picking out bands that we’ll like and sending them on, so when he sent through the new EP, All The Time In The World, from Northern rock group Last Transmission, we were pretty intrigued as to what we were in for. Described as forming out of a mutual affection for Foo Fighters, Manic Street Preachers and Jimmy Eat World, these guys are drawing on their influences to put together alluring, melodic tunes backed by thoughtfully paced riffs – which sounds pretty cool to me! Due for release on the 17th of June this year, I thought it only right we have a listen and check out what’s on offer from this highly recommended debut, just to see for ourselves.
Kicking off with All You Left Behind we’re immediately tossed into a realm of upbeat guitar lines, rumbling bass rhythms and soft yet evocative vocal lines, forming a mix which is sure to grab your attention from the word go. Upbeat and well mixed to allow all of the elements to be heard, this opening track sets the record up as it should, immediately getting your attention and luring you in, not going over the top on the distortion front but still incorporating enough power to make sure you’re left satisfied. Packed to the rafters with catchy hooks, the influences of the band are clear throughout, but not in a copycat fashion, merely serving as a familiar hook within this well-crafted opener. Anything To Anyone continues this approach with aplomb, this time adding in more of a punk edge to the opening moments before once again resuming their laid back yet rock orientated foray. Catchy once again, this track serves to continue the progress of the EP, demonstrating the bands understanding of melody and balance, and resulting in a track which is sure to become a live favourite as soon as people hear it.
Mess You Make marks a slight change in the progression of things, this time offering up a more heard hitting opening sequence to kick things off, before once again lowering the impact for the main section of the song. There’s something emotional about this track, possibly in the way the vocals work around the backing music, combining with the guitar work whilst the drum and bass combination serves to bolster the mix – it’s a well packed sound and one which is sure to connect with people. It’s when 24 comes around though that we reach my personal favourite moment of the EP, presenting us with an uplifting and off heavy mix of guitars, drums and soaring vocals. From intricate lead lines through to riffs packed with power, this track has them all, and in my opinion, holds some serious single potential for the guys. Definitely a track to make sure you check out if you get a chance, this is almost like a run through of the sound of Last Transmission, like a demonstration of their abilities if you will.
Closing with Separate Ways the guys finish the EP on a high, closing with a hard hitting, punk orientated track which will surely go down a storm on the live scene. Packed with power and punch, the final track here closes the EP as it should, leaving things on a high and you safe in the knowledge that it’s been a cool EP, you’ve found a new band to check out, and you’ve got another must see band on your list!
I’ve listened through All The Time In The World from Last Transmission a few times now, and every time I listen to it I notice new bits, new elements, and find myself sitting back and taking it all in in the same manner I did when I first heard it. Sure, this isn’t the most complex or heavy band in the world, but that’s not the point. The point here is you’ve got a group of guys who understand their music, understand their style and write according to those elements – the result is something special, simple as.
