Leaves' Eyes - LIVE
Firewind, Leaves' Eyes and Dendera @ The Talking Heads, Southampton 21/09/12
An evening of energy filled power metal took place recently at one my favourite venues in my local town. Greek power metallers Firewind headlined this event, both support acts were incredible too.
Local metallers Dendera show a lot of potential in their performance; they could possibly become the next Iron Maiden. However, I would love to see them experiment with their sound a little bit more, Ashley Edison's powerful voice would work so well on a ballad. A great start to the night from Dendera and it gave me a definite indication of what was to come.
The main support act were Norwegian/German folk metallers Leaves' Eyes. They are a band I would listen to quite a lot when I was in college so it was a great opportunity to see them perform live. It started off with powerful opening song Spirit's Masquerade from their latest album Meredead, as the band made their way onto the stage the cheers got louder. It was great to see just how many fans lived locally. It was also amazing to see lead singer Liv Kristine going back to her Norwegian roots through the song Krakevisa, performing it with such passion. Memories of which will stay with me for a long time It was a fantastic performance from Leaves' Eyes and I would love to see them back in Southampton soon.
So to the main act of the evening. I had only heard of Firewind briefly so was curious about how they sounded live. Their spectacular introduction blew me away with their opening song Wall Of Sound with it's powerful solos from guitars and keyboards; my two favourite instruments. Apollo Papathanasio's powerful vocals and his passion for performing stood out very clearly throughout the show. Their interaction with crowds was also fantastic to see; getting them make some noise and clap their hands along to their songs. The genre power metal is gradually becoming quite popular in the UK and the scene is gradually growing, bands like Firewind show the potential to make the scene grow further.
Overall a fantastic night that I would love to see again soon.
