Liar Liar
Garry from SAN PR recently got in touch about Liar Liar and their debut EP, He Said, She Said, due to hit stores on Monday the 5th of November. Formed in Sheffield at the turn of the year, the chaps may well be a young group, but their sound which melds Blink 182 with You Me At Six is sure to be a hit and take off the world over. I figured the only way to really see what was going on was to hit play and settle back for a good old listen of the four tracks!
Opening with Heart Attack we’re immediately thrown into a melee of upbeat guitars, powerful drums and bass behind the scenes, and a serious sense of jumpy good times flowing through the music. Keeping everything melodic throughout, the opening track on offer here harks towards the influences of the band, showing off their pop punk roots but also their modern take on things and approach to doing things. Coupling the melody with a serious sense of power and determination throughout, this opening track suggests good things to follow, immediately hooking you in and getting you listening to what’s going on. High N Low continues this approach, once again throwing us straight into a catchy melee of guitars and drums, forming a sound which holds the power of punk but the catchiness of the pop side of the genre. Hook after hook fly out of the mix, resulting in a stand out track which is sure to rapidly become a live favourite, the sort of thing which people will beg them to play. This track was my own personal favourite from the EP, simply because it made me want to go see the band, grab a beer, and enjoy every single moment of it!
People Never Change seems to lower the tone for a moment initially but soon returns us to the upbeat punky approach that made the first two tracks so appealing. Catchy once again from the off, there seems to be a more emotional edge to things here, almost adding in more feeling to the track and crafting something which moves away from a simplistic pop punk tag and turns instead into something deeper and more powerful. This track reminded me of New Found Glory in some ways, there’s that sound which is accessible, easy to listen to, and damned good fun from start to finish! Closing with It Doesn’t Take A Hero we’re left on an upbeat and jumpy note once again, finishing as the EP began and showing that these guys know what they’re doing. Layered vocals and raucous guitar lines all form together to craft the final moments of the EP, finishing on a high and leaving you wanting more but knowing that what you’ve just heard has been damned good, upbeat, and has put you in a good mood for the foreseeable future.
I’m always wary of bands that are compared to Blink 182 as it became such a common thing to do for a while that bands just began to sound the same, that hasn’t happened here. Liar Liar have got a fresh sound which is upbeat, good fun, and the sort of music which you want to see live. If you’re looking for a new band to discover on the live scene, someone to go and see to drink beer and enjoy, this is them – so get on it!
