MaLoKai
Garry from SAN PR recently got in touch about power popsters MaLoKai who are scheduled to release their brand new EP, Heart Beats, on the 13th of February. According to their press release, ‘The EP features six blistering tunes loaded with up-tempo arrangements, soaring guitars, and infectious choruses that’ll require a crowbar to prise out of your head’ – which sounds like a pretty promising start!
Building into the track through opening track Overture, your immediately engaged by the heart-monitor sound effect which leads naturally into a building guitar line – the EP’s not started properly and already you find yourself being pulled in an engaged by these guys! As Rumours starts everything properly, this patience and engagement is rewarded by what can only be described as one hell of a catchy track! Hammering guitars underpinned by soaring lead lines, the drums and the bass all backing everything up – this is a massive sound from the off! The vocals are clean yet powerful, sounding very akin to the popular pop-punk bands like New Found Glory, yet also somehow sounding fresh and new. What I really like about this track is how the guitars back up the vocals throughout, then gang vocals add an extra level of depth to things, what you end up with is a sound which is melodic, harmonic and downright awesome. Catchier than anything I’ve come across in a fair while, I’m beginning to see what the press release meant when it said these guys would get in your mind and stick there, I’m going to be humming this tune for days!
Heartbeats follows on and sticks to much the same recipe as before, opening big and fast and not relenting until the second the track comes to a close. This track is far more emotionally laden than the previous, palm muted guitar lines adding a further depth to things yet still keeping everything insanely catchy and in-your-face. The bass is really prominent in this track as well, something which further develops this track into something bigger, something heavier and something which will shake your floor boards until the neighbours bang on the wall. As it fades and Price Tag comes into being, everything continues to be melodic and hard hitting, again adopting the catchy approach. More palm muted guitars accentuate the vocal line and turn this into a cover which is truly to be reckoned with – I used to hate this track and now thanks to these guys I seem to have developed a love for it (whether Jessie J agrees is another matter, but her version is shite…..my view there of course!) Make sure you check this track out when you hear these guys – personally I think this track is a triumph and I for one am going to be talking about this track for a long time to come – bravo!
Young And Dumb follows on next, a track which once again opens fast and energetic, full of distorted guitar lines and hammering drums with that bass still right there in the mix to be heard. This is yet another catchy track, this time sounding akin to the likes of Zebrahead in the way it’s put together yet somehow still keeping that fresh feeling to things. What I’ve really liked through all of the tracks so far is how they sound relatively unique to each other, yet you can tell it’s still the guys in MaLoKai playing, it’s quite an accomplishment. You comes in next, almost fading in from the previous track and keeping the guitars low to start with, it’s almost like a preparation for what is to follow. Kicking into an emotionally laden track full of soaring vocal lines, hammering guitars and that awesome bass, this is another highlight of the album and another track which you need to make sure you listen to. Another catchy chorus greets you on this track which is sure to have you singing along after a couple of listens, I can only imagine how well this track is received on the live scene but I imagine it’s a pretty awesome sight to behold.
What’s Inside closes the album, a grand finale to proceedings opening up with soaring guitars and hammering drum lines, it’s really quite stunning how massive a sound these guys have managed to create here. The track is catchy (as you’d expect) and once again full of hooks which will pull you in and get you singing along with the band, it’s really an awesome ending to the EP as it closes proceedings but leaves you wanting to go back to go through it all over again.
MaLoKai are one of those bands which you come across from time to time who really make you sit back and just think wow, this is awesome. Their music isn’t the most complex or advanced in the world, but it’s catchy, it’s well performed and written and the whole package works on a level which makes you want to listen to it, and surely that’s the key?! I’m going to have to get out to see these guys play live sometime soon as I think their live show is going to be something pretty damned awesome, but that will be revealed once I’ve seen them! In the meantime, I would highly advise you to check these guys out as based on this, I think they’re going to be becoming more well known very very soon!
