Mardigras Bombers
We were recently sent through a copy of Come On In from post punk band, The Mardigras Bombers to see what we thought. Another one from STP Records, I figured it only right that I check out what was on offer, despite my feeling bad at having not bought one as the band have asked on their facebook page, although I do confess to being a mingebag (to see what I’m on about just look up the band!).
Validate The Mission gets things going and immediately throws us into a mixture of hammering backing tracks and spitting vocals, adopting a sound which sounds like a combination of modern punk crossed with old skool stylings. The end result here is a sound which you can’t help but embrace, it’s got that sound which makes you want to get out on the live circuit to see them, makes you want to hear more and intrigues you as to what’s going to come next. What comes next is No Sleep, another raucous track built for the live scene and designed to get everyone moving. Adding in a sense of the funky southern rock to combine with the all out punk approach of the previous track, this is another track which is going to get you shifting from the minute it gets going. Somehow managing to make the track catchy as well as hard hitting, we appear to have stumbled across a bit of a gem of an album here!
New Locusts and Resurrection Gang both follow on in much the same style, but it’s Ah Pook! which marks a change on the album. The track seems a shock after the previous ones yet somehow manages to still sit happily amongst the others, crafting a sound which is relatively laid back and chilled, yet still energetic throughout. The bass is the most striking element here, creating that rumbling backing which keeps you wanting more and keeps you moving. Returning to their original sounds, Girl X is soon upon us to continue the roll of the album, returning to the distorted and powerful approach of the early moments of the album. This track is one of my personal favourites from the album, and one which makes me want to get out there to see them live. The combination of male and female vocals here works on a different level, one which will pull you in and make you realise just why you hit play on this at the start, it’s a great mix.
Alien Heat and Invisible Idiots both come as noteworthy moments on the album, but it’s once again Love Explained which really hits the homerun with their sound, crafting a sound which is akin to rock n roll whilst still managing to keep the urgency of punk flowing through things. Powerful, catchy and heavy yet somehow funky throughout, this is another track which is going to stand out as a moment on the album you need to hear, and a track which is testament to the hard work of these guys as a band. All too soon though it’s Modest Proposal to close the album once and for all, leaving us with no doubt that this is going to be a band to add to the ‘to see’ list. Closing with one final hurrah designed to get you up out of your seat for one last go, this final track leaves the album in a perfect place, leaving you wanting more and wanting to know what’s going to come next.
The Mardigras Bombers have got a bit of a strange outlook on their music, but personally I quite like it! Sure, there’s the elements of punk, but it’s more complex than that, and it’s more than just some blokes having a laugh playing music. If you really listen to the music which they’ve come up with you’ll soon realise that this could well be a force to be reckoned with, and a band which is going to really be at home on the live scene – definitely one to look out for.
