Marvlec
Formed in 2009, Marvlec are a US band who have already graced the cover of magazines, appeared on TV channels and opened for Fuel. With a sound comparable to the likes of Tool, Shinedown, Seether and Pearl Jam, these guys are out there forming their own take on the sound in order to get their name out there. Creating an optimistic and uplifting influence within their music, this EP, What Are You Waiting For, is due for release in the UK on the 14th of May, and could well be one to look out for!
As Endeavor comes into being to open the EP there’s a hell of a sense created, a sense of uplifting and melodic music which grabs your soul and forces itself upon you. Heavy whilst still keeping a sense of melody running through things from start to finish, this is a hell of a track, and one which is going to stand these guys in good stead to get some serious recognition over here when it comes out. Demonstrating why they’ve received the comparisons they have, the sound here matches the likes of Pearl Jam and Seether whilst adding in a further sense of power through the powerful backing section of drums and bass, the guitars soaring over the mix and the raspy vocals pulling everything together. On first listen it would be easy to say these guys have simply copied their influences, but there’s more to it than that – this is a personal take on a style, and it’s done damned well.
Folllowing on with Pack And Run (see video below), the theme of hard hitting rock continues, continuing to form a sound which is both melodic and hard hitting at the same time. Incorporating their influences into their sound without allowing themselves to sound too like their peers, this is a clever mix of their own personal musical outlook and the roots they have grown from. As if to show off that they can do what they want to when they set their mind to it, this track stands out as a triumph as both a rock and a pop track, with enough power to keep the heavier fans happy and enough catchiness to keep the pop fans involved. Closing with title track, What Are You Waiting For, there’s one last moment of musical genius to behold before the EP comes to a close. As a final track this does the job perfectly and will leave you wanting more, wanting to know how they’re going to follow on from this EP and craft another EP/album which flows so perfectly from start to finish.
I’m always wary when I see bands who sound like Pearl Jam as I am a huge Pearl Jam fan, but Marvlec may have just changed my opinion of that. The sound they’ve achieved is so huge, so dynamic and so powerful it’s impossible to resist, yet it also holds enough melody and harmony to sooth and comfort, leaving you content in the knowledge that you’ve just heard a band which could well change the world. Is this a Bill and Ted moment, I don’t know, but I reckon we’re going to be seeing a lot more of these guys.
