I caught Matt’s Sold Out Perth Show at The Astor Theatre on Sat 9th June.
Matt’s backing band were Timmy on Drums, Joel on Guitar, T-Bone on Bass & Keys and Bree on Guitar, Keys, Flute and additional vocals. Matt himself is gently spoken committed musician, the evolution since idol is dramatic. Its all about his expressionism via his songs and his performance musically and vocally.
The Astor Theatre is a classic music venue in Perth, majority seated, with a standing area in front of stage. This was one artist that I would actually enjoyed watching from a seat, which is usually unheard of in my vocabulary. The sell out audience was a diverse group, slightly favoring the females. There were some heckles from the crowd during his set, nothing disrespectful, just inappropriate for the setting. I was slightly embarrassed and disappointed by some of the audience at times throughout the show. Matt Corby’s style is deep, dignified and poignant. The most well known of his tracks ‘Brother’ is not fully representative of this artist. Anyone basing their decision to buy tickets to see Matt on this one track, really needed to be more familiar with all of Matt’s material and what he is about. Matt enters stage with a nod and quick hello, before beginning to play solo at first, the mellow ‘Song For’. His second song ‘Winter’ has him looping vocals not once but twice to create the sound, beautiful song performed flawlessly by Matt accompanied by the band. After the third track Matt engages the crowd and talks about the tour and his band. Sixth in the set is ‘Brother’ which is of course well received. ‘June’ a touching tribute to his grandmother is a haunting and emotionally charged song, with lyrics that touch the heart and bring a tear to the eye. Multitalented musician Bree performs vocally throughout the set as well as playing guitar, keys and flute. Her voice compliments Matt’s material beautifully. A talent all by herself, we may hear more from this young lady in her own right. A Matt Corby Concert is a unique experience, there is calm and beautiful words and music. It doesn’t fit in with the likes of anything I have seen before. The sound is quality, the atmosphere is relaxed. He is the type of performer you could watch and enjoy on any level, from busking or playing stadiums, well worth becoming familiar with his material and seeing him live if you get an opportunity. Nothing seems to challenge Matt’s musical abilities he is able to perform comfortably in many different styles and genres, which means there are no limits to the direction he may take in the future. It would seem his only limitations will be his imagination, and right now the material that is producing is award-winning stuff.
Special Thank You to Matt, the childhood friend of Matt Corby and tour assistant, for the chat after the show. It was great to get some feedback on the tour from an insiders point of view.
