Mercy Street
Here we have a hard working five piece band from across the pond in Canada. Situated in Winnipeg, the band has the dedication of vocalist and guitar player Kyle Monkman to thank for getting them to where they are today. Not to take anything away from the other four members of the group either as without them the band wouldn’t exist.
The band was good enough to send us the link to their page where I found a selection of tracks that I could indulge in. If you are looking for a punk rock band with a purpose that oozes desire then these are the guys for you. The intro personifies this superbly, a killer riff gets things under way hitting home, leaving a mark and making its presence known. The addition of the drum beat gives the track volume and gives you a sample of things to come. Soaring vocals complete the intro; wetting the pallet and making you want the next track.
Desperation Is My Middle Name was the first full track on the list and finishes what the intro started. The feel good nature to the tracks is clear to see and is apparent in many of the other tracks, especially in Last Song. The tempos being thrown around are insane; they take you on a real rollercoaster ride pushing you to beyond reasonable limits. I liked the backing vocals that worked in tandem with the lead vocals during the Last Song, they sound good considering the tracks were recorded in the guy’s houses, always a good sign for an awesome live band.
As I progress through the tracks I am amazed by the variations shown from track to track. Before you have listened to any of the tracks it’s easy to think, ahhh just another punk rock band, spitting out the same old riffs and hooks over and over again, but listening to this band they are the complete opposite. Yes the recording isn't great, however when you see past that minor detail there are so many positives to see. It's obvious to see that each track is carefully sculpted and perfected to the best of their ability and with the resources available.
I liked the sound of these guys, each track had something a little different, would certainly love to go to a live gig as I think it could get messy. Look forward to hearing more from the band in the future.
