Message To Venus
A lot of the time I read a bio from a band, then write down an introduction to them based on their information. However, when I read the bio featured on the website of Message To Venus, a band we were recently put on to, I felt it was so awesome, I had to share it. So:
What series of events unites a few strangers to make music together? Is it a cosmic anomaly or destiny? Jandre Nadal, John Feliciano, Edgar Ramos and JuanMa Font gravitated towards each other because of a shared desire to create intoxicating and sublime music. Since 2009 this intricate sonic workshop has yielded blistering tracks with great depth, melding dreamlike sounds with unheard-of guitar strength, tight bass, high energy drums and powerful melodic vocals.
How cool a bio is that? So, without further ado, let’s check out what’s on offer from their music in the form of The Envelope.
Opening with The Show we’re not given a lot to go with initially, a guitar line leading the way into the bass heavy mix which forms around you, not giving away what’s to come but luring you in to listen harder. As the vocals come in to take the lead we’re led further into the mix from the band and shown their heavier side, shown what they’re capable of and hooked from the word go. This track is deep, powerful and hits all of the notes you want it to, offering up a mix of heavy, soft, atmospheric and catchy, the sort of thing which will satisfy that heavy urge whilst still keeping a sense of melody firmly at the forefront of what’s going on. Moving into Universal You the melodic approach continues, once again picking up the pace and offering us a further taste of their melodic power. Sounding like a mix of Hoobastank and Breed 77 with an alternative edge, this track once again packs a punch whilst still managing to keep the sense of catchiness and melody flowing throughout. It’s striking how well the track here is put together, offering up a sound which is accomplished, professional and one which is sure to stay with you for a long time after hearing it.
Stripped begins by adding an electronic edge into the mix, almost sounding like an industrial style track initially as it grows before once again revealing the true colours of what we’re in for. More laid back and emotionally charged than the previous tracks, this is one which is going to work with those moments when you want to have a think, those moments when you simply want to take in what’s happening around you and where you are in life. Once again combining chunky guitars with a real sense of catchy melody, this track is a serious high point on the EP, and one to make sure you check out for sure. As if to try to raise the bar even further, Change comes up next and once again takes the EP to a whole new level. Opening with a hammering intro before pulling back to accentuate the vocals, there’s something about this track which is almost spellbinding, the sort of thing which you can’t help but listen to, it lures you in and keeps you going from start to finish. Personally, this is my favourite track off of the EP, there’s just something about it which is impossible to resist, something which will hook people in, and something which will stand this track in damned good stead on the live scene for sure.
Closing with To Smile the EP finishes on a laid back and acoustic feeling, finishing with a heartfelt and emotionally charged track designed to close the EP, but keep you guessing as to how they’re going to follow it. It’s a brave move finishing an EP like this with an acoustic track, but somehow here, the guys have made it work. Soothing, soft and emotional, the final moments do what they should, leave you content at what you’ve heard and safe in the knowledge that there’s bands out there doing damned good music damned well.
I wasn’t sure about what to expect from Message to Venus when their EP came through other than guessing that it was going to be interesting, but what we’ve found here is an EP I know I’m going to return to time and time again. From start to finish this is an EP which offers up heavy, intricate, melodic and powerful music, all the time pushing the boundaries of what you expect to hear. Definitely a band to be keeping an eye out for, and one I need to see live.
