Milestones
We were recently sent through the latest EP, Entropy, from Dublin based Milestones, to see what we thought. Released on tape cassette and limited to 100 units, each in a hand screen printed card cover and with a unique download code – to make this a release people really have to get out to get hold of. Drawing influence from the likes of Comeback Kid, Defeater and Everytime I Die, this promises to be an EP to check out – so I hit play to see what was going on!
As Still Organs gets things going we’re immediately tossed into a distorted yet uplifting sense of power, the guitars leading the way whilst the pounding drum lines set the rolling pace and the vocals lead us through the track. Powerful and distorted from the word go, there’s something technical about the mix here which stands this out as a track to check out, showing that this genre is by no means simple, there’s too much to it! Despite only being a short track, this one packs a hell of a punch, leading naturally on to Premonitions to full begin the album. Hammering into a track which is sure to get pits moving, crowds surging and venues crumbling, this track holds everything you could possibly want from a hard hitting, metal crossed with hardcore style track. The urgency of the vocals is clear throughout, building on the bass heavy rhythms to form a sound which is deeper than you would expect, once again moving away from the simplistic tag of the genre to reveal the bands own complexities and understanding of their music.
Showing off a different approach once again for Old Hands, this time we’re thrust into a groove orientated mix of pumping guitar lines, powerful drumming and more roaring vocals, the mix turning into something which is going to get people moving along from the off. This ability to adapt and adjust their style throughout the record is something which is going to set Milestones apart from a lot of the other bands in this field, they clearly understand what they’re doing but most of all, are clearly doing it for the love of it. Graveside is further evidence of this, once again launching us straight into the track without any warning and forcing you back into that pit of all out devastation. Powerful and up beat throughout, this is another track which builds on the heavy guitar lines to form something that is going to find its full force on the live scene. Somehow even managing to incorporate a sense of catchiness into their track, this one stands out as a serious high point on the record, and one which you need to make sure you check out.
Pound Of Flesh leads us towards the closing of the track, throwing down with a fast paced all out assault from the word go. Powerful guitar lines, pounding drum lines, bass heavy rhythms and roaring vocals abound throughout this track, keeping the sound heavy, full on and in your face from the word go. It’s only left then to Ladders to close the record, leaving on a high note and once again demonstrating that this isn’t a band to second guess. Finishing with a raw and powerful track, this is almost like the closing of a book, finishing at a point where you know there’s more to come and that the band haven’t full revealed what they’ve got yet, but knowing that whatever comes next, providing they stick to their guns, is going to be good!
I wasn’t sure about Milestones when I first hit play on this one as the sound was so raw, I wasn’t sure they could pull of a full record of it – but I was wrong. From start to finish you’ve got a display of a real band there, each track showcasing their style and showing that real music doesn’t need to be cleaned up or over produced, it can have an impact simply through hammering out hard hitting tracks which do all the talking for them. This is a band that I think have got a lot more to come, so I’ll be keeping an eye out to see what happens next!
