Motives For Moments
We were recently contacted by Mark from Motives For Moments from Dublin, Ireland. Describing themselves as Pop-Punk/Easycore (haven’t heard that one before) yet throwing out some covers of songs by the likes of Flo Rida and Souija Boy (don’t know if I’ve spelled that right so apologies if I’ve not!) these guys seem to be coming up with some interesting stuff, so I thought I’d better have a little listen! (note – for the purposes of this review I will be covering the 4 tracks from the band and omitting the cover tracks – but have a listen to them for sure!).
Opening with No Time For Third Chances you’re faced with a sludgy guitar line, raw drum beat and soaring vocal line, I’m getting a trace of pop-punk but not an amount which I would say classes them under that heading. Fast, distorted at times, melodic throughout but most of all catchy, this is a track which is a perfect introduction to a band, it seems to showcase the elements they’ve got going on and makes you realise that these guys can play. What I really liked on this track was the production, it’s not over produced meaning you get a sense of how these guys sound on the live scene, something which is all too often lost when bands have their music made ‘perfect’ by jumped up producers, this isn’t, this is how the band sounds.
POW! follows on at number 2, another track which opens with that sludgy guitar lick once more before kicking in with some gang vocals – I’ll be honest and say it caught me off guard a little at first as there was no warning it was coming! Catchy once again, this track is once again relatively raw in its sound, but I think that’s half of the appeal of it to be honest. Keeping things at a relatively fast pace throughout, this track is another one which screams of the live scene, it’s the perfect track for a live show so it would be interesting to see how it’s received out there. As the track comes to a close and Startstruck comes into being, everything seems to tone down a notch, almost becoming ballady in its sound at first before once again picking up the pace and launching head first into an assault of mixed guitar lines and hammering drums. This track is more emotionally laden than the other tracks which have come before it, it’s got that slowed down approach which keeps the track powerful yet to the point, it’s a winning combination and these guys have done it well here. Another catchy track, this is one which I think could maybe do with a bit more production, but again that’s not a bad thing necessarily I don’t think. With a bit of refining this is going to be an amazing track – so get on it!
Final track Summer Came Early closes the selection from these guys, another example of differing guitar lines, hammering drums and soaring clean vocal lines. As a finale to the selection for me, it seems to sum up everything so far, almost like a blurb on the back of a book explaining what you’re going to get if you have a listen to everything else. Faster vocals are almost spat out over distorted guitars whilst the drums and bass back everything up, what you’re left with is a track which(although syncopated at times) is easily accessible, easy to listen to and one which on the live scene is sure to become a favourite.
I’ve really liked hearing Motives For Moments, the raw approach to their music is something which a lot of bands lose so it’s almost refreshing to hear. Their music isn’t going to change the world I don’t think, but it’s damned good to listen to and on the live scene, well I can only imagine to be honest! Given a festival setting, later afternoon, a few beers going down and the sun shining, there’s very few bands I can think of who would suit that setting better! I’ll be interested to hear what comes next as based on this, the ability is there, a little bit of refining of the details and this could well be a band which is going to do very, VERY well indeed.
