My Mind Races
Another band from Ireland here in the form of My Mind Races, a 5 piece from Dublin. Describing their sound as quiet/loud/soft/heavy I have to say I was more than a little intrigued by what these guys were producing, so thought I should check it out to find out for myself!
Opening with Salamander I begin to see what they mean, the sound is both deep yet refined, clean yet dark whilst still managing to sound uplifting somehow. The guitars are relatively laid back over the drums, but the show stealer has to be the bass line which roves around and adds to everything else. The vocals are kept clean yet powerful, the whole track forming something which you want to hear more of, you want to know what’s coming next as it progresses. There’s a catchy edge to things here as well, something which can often be lost when the music becomes complex, but it all works (and works well!). I like this track, and to be honest I can’t place exactly what I like about it, it’s just the mix of everything going on, almost sounding soothing but engaging at the same time, it’s a great introduction to a band!
FUMMR follows on next, another track which is impossible to define genre wise. There’s a real edge of franticness to this track ,it’s faster whilst retaining that sense of melody and progression from the previous track. The vocals are kept relatively clean, this time sounding akin to Silver Chair when they were midway through their career, but the music removes all other sense of comparison there. There’s a lot going on once again, the bass roving around, the guitars working to keep the mix together, the drums setting the pace and a piano (I think) going on there as well, yet it all works well and doesn’t become over bearing, which is awesome to hear! Building up to the closing of the song, everything seems to come together over the closing moments of the track, creating a sound which is even more massive than before, occasionally sounding disjointed but all the time somehow keeping it all together and there, it’s something pretty special!
Final track Keep Pushin’ Away (apart from two live tracks) closes the selection on the bands FB page, another track which straight away pulls you in and makes you want to hear more. Less produced on the recording, there’s a real rawness here which is sure to appeal to a lot of people as well as giving a real sense of what these guys sound like on the live scene. Catchy yet kept relatively basic throughout, this track leaves a taste in your mouth which you won’t get rid of, it makes you want to hear more and to see these guys, something I really have to achieve!
I’ve been surprised by My Mind Races, and I don’t know why. The music is deep and powerful whilst somehow almost holding back and not allowing themselves to create something heavy. There’s an intricacy to the music here as well which will impress anyone who plays an instrument, I mean this is seriously accomplished stuff going on here! I look forward to seeing what comes next from these guys as based on this, it should be pretty damned cool!
