Overweight
We were recently contacted by Garry from SAN PR about Overweight from Belgium and their new album Chapter 11. Offering up some good old funky ska music, I was looking forward to hearing what was on offer from these guys!
Opening with Turbo, you’re immediately thrown in a punky jumpy mixture of guitars and brass sections, all pinned together with a solid drum beat – this is good time feel good music which is sure to keep live crowds happy. Melodic and fun from the outset, the guitars and drums back up the clean yet powerful vocals, offering up an almost Reel Big Fish feeling to the music which is sure to engage crowds and keep people listening to the music – I for one would love to see this live. Catchy right up until the last second of the track, this is one hell of an opening to an album and sets the bar pretty high for what’s got to follow it!
Guantanamo follows on, opening with the same rigour as before, using the brass section to add a funky edge to the music whilst keeping the guitar and bass high in the mix under the vocals, even sitting listening to this at home I felt the urge to begin skanking around the room along with the music! Adding in a more distorted guitar line in the chorus this time around, catchy doesn’t come close to describing this music, you will be converted as soon as you hear it. Generation ? continues the theme set so far, once again opening with some pounding drums and that awesome brass section, underpinning everything with a chunky guitar riff which adds the punky edge to this track even more. As you listen to this track you can see the crowds jumping along to this music, it’s anthemic! This is quite possibly my favourite track from the album as it keeps varying what’s going on meaning you’re always listening for what’s coming next – awesome stuff.
I Want It You Got It follows on, opening with the guitars and vocals taking the lead over a solid drum beat. As the brass section kicks in once again you find yourself sitting back questioning why you don’t already own this album, it’s pure sunshine in musical form. Feel good, happy, jumpy and fun throughout, this is a track which is sure to keep you coming back for more from these guys, keeping things catchy to make sure you are chanting ‘I Want It You Got It’ along with the band.
Final track No More closes the album in perfect style, opening with guitars and bass over some pounding drums before kicking in with some powerful vocals, it’s a contrast on the other tracks as it’s much heavier initially, but soon we’re thrown back into the mix of brass and guitars. Catchy once again from the outset, this track is another example of why you should be listening to this album, they can play their instruments and craft tracks which will have you sitting back enjoying the music before jumping around the room like a lunatic!
I’ve loved every track on this album, it’s simple good time music which you’ll want to play when the sun’s shining and you’ve got some beers on the go. I for one class myself as a dedicated fan of Overweight now and personally can’t wait to hear what’s going to come next from them!
