Podracer - Parking Cars and Pumping Gas
We featured Podracer a while back so when Damien dropped me a message about their new album, Parking Cars and Pumping Gas, I was looking forward to seeing what they’d been up to since our last visit. Damien went on to say that they were pretty proud of what they’d achieved with this record, so I figured I’d spend some time checking it out and seeing what was on offer from them with this latest offering!
Opening with Runes we’re immediately thrown straight into the signature Podracer sound, the opening moments not messing about with introductions or faffing about but instead throwing us straight into the mix and reminding us why we loved it so much the first time we checked them out. Powerful guitars combine with rumbling bass rhythms and pounding drumlines, the mix forming something which is up beat, fast, hard hitting and downright dirty. To me, this is live music at its best, the sort of thing which is going to get you jumping, begging for more and the venue crumbling around you from the sheer power on offer. Vulpes continues this approach, once again launching straight into the track and keeping the pace of the album moving. Hammering guitars combine with raucous drum and bass rhythms, the vocals almost spitting out over the mix and pulling you further in, not allowing you a moment to breath but instead dragging you along with the bands distorted ride. Bass heavy and almost funky at times, this track is further evidence of the work the guys have put into this work, achieving something more powerful than before but still managing to let you know it’s Podracer you’re hearing, definitely a solid start to this new record.
Hammers And A Handgun further develops this idea of heavy assed melody, this time launching us into a track which on first listen, might sound disjointed, but soon resumes the expected pace and approach. This track is the sort of thing which is going to get people moving from the off, the sort of track which has the potential to be the break through track for these guys, and one which you need to be sitting up and paying attention to for sure. Cabin once continues the approach of not messing about and instead, launches us straight into a fast paced melee of hammering guitar lines, pounding drum lines and more of that roving, rumbling bass. There’s something about this track which reminds me of heavy punk, the sort of thing which gets you jumping whilst at the same time, manages to satisfy that heavy craving deep within you. Combining the melody with power, and the elements of the band in a manner which allows you to hear everything going on, this track presents us with a serious high point on the record, and a track which stands out as one of my favourites from the record as a whole.
Twelve Step, Hobbyhorse.Pocket Monster and X-Ray all continue to push the boundaries of the album, each track presenting us with another take on the signature Podracer sound and showing us that they’re continuing to develop their style and ability. It’s when Nothing To Lose comes about though that we’re once again shown another serious high point on the record, the sort of track which has the potential to push these guys up to a new level and get them some serious recognition. Working at a tone which is sure to get crowds moving, fists pumping and people singing along, this is another live anthem in the waiting, and another of my personal favourites from the record. Imagine the sort of music which you hear and instantly want to drive fast to and you’re getting towards the sort of sound that’s on offer here, it’s an infectious track designed to work into your head, get you singing along and stay with you for a long while to come.
Californian Boys presents us with another take on the style of the band, offering up a sound which is almost more restrained than other moments yet still manages to hammer home the message of the band. Deep and powerful bass rhythms work through the track whilst the light yet heavy guitar work soars over the top, forming a sound which could well accompany an extreme sports video (see the California link there?!) yet at the same time, holds enough power to get you going a little bit mad when you get out to see them live. It’s only left then to Easy Singles and Hitchhike Hooker to close the record, closing with two familiar tracks which we’ve featured before and reminding us of why it was we started listening to these guys in the first place. Closing on a high was never going to be a hard task for these guys so when it comes to be, it’s no real surprise, but what an album!
Podracer are one of those bands that have been with us from the very beginning of Loud-Stuff, and over that time we’ve seen them develop their style, hone their skills and work to get their music out there. This album presents us with the result of all that hard work, a sign that the band are continuing to develop and an example of what we can expect from them moving forwards from here. Definitely a band you should be listening to if you haven’t yet, get on it!

Podracer - Easy Singles and more...
Those lovely chaps over in Podracer recently dropped us a line about their new video for Easy Singles, and to let us know how they’re getting on with the new record! Now we’ve had a sneak peak at some of the tracks coming up so figured we’d get the video posted, and tempt you with what’s to come.
Listening to Twelve Step there’s a sign that the band haven’t lost any of their power of melody, forming a track which sounds upbeat and melodic throughout. Runes continues this idea, offering more raucous beats, hammering guitar lines and spat vocal lines, forming a track which sounds like it’s going to be one hell of a killer to check out! Hobbyhorse seems to mark a slower and more hard hitting track, offering up those raspy vocal lines, hammering guitar moments and pounding drumlines, again suggesting that this is going to be a track to make sure you check out when the album is upon us!

Hammers And A Handgun is a tricky one to pigeon hole from the sound of the preview, almost sounding like a combination of the bands rock elements with an almost atmospheric catchiness behind it all, this is going to be one I go out to look for just to see how it ends up! Finally, Cabin leaves us with the signature Podracer sound, jumping straight into an upbeat mix of drums, guitar lines and pounding vocal lines which will get you singing along from the off!
I love it when I hear tracks before they’re released, but sometimes a preview simply isn’t enough! The tracks here all sound like winners, and you can check out the video to Easy Singles to the left, so it will be interesting to see how the final album ends up! All I know is that after hearing this, I’m pretty excited! To find out more about Podracer, and to keep up with what they’re up to, check out their Facebook page HERE. Words: Dave Nicholls |
Podracer
We were recently contacted by Damien from Podracer, to let us know about them so we could check them out. Described as ‘angry, noisy, trashy, punch and irreverent as they possibly could be’, these guys seem to be out to bring back the elements of rock and metal which made it just a damned good genre. I figured it was only right I check out what was on offer based on their description – so what does the music hold?
We were firstly put on to X-Ray, the video to which can be seen below. This is the most recent of tracks from the band as they’re due to be hitting the studio soon to get recording – so check out their video to get an idea of what they’re up to now! In my humble opinion, this is the sort of track which is going to slay on the live scene, whipping the live crowds into a frenzy and getting every single person on side from the word go. If you ever had doubts about whether this was going to be a band to get out and see – X-Ray should answer that question for you!
Hitchhike Hooker from their soundcloud page demonstrates where the band have come from and how their sound has developed, sounding just as raw as X-Ray and launching you into a track which you’re going to be begging to see live! Powerful and hard-hitting throughout, this track may well be a downright dirty and raw track, yet it still manages to pack a catchy punch, getting you moving along and making you want to hear more of what the band have got on offer! The most striking part of this track has to be the middle section where everything almost pulls back musically, yet the vocals become even more hard hitting and emotionally charged – the contrast against the hammering melee of distortion which follows is damned striking!
Easy Singles continues the idea of opening hard and keeping things going as hard as possible for the duration of the track, sounding like a melee of indie music, grunge and hammering metal – it’s a clever mix but one which the band seem to have pulled off with aplomb. The subject matter of the track makes this track one which is impossible to ignore, taking a shot at the posers of society and making you question whether you want to simply follow, or be like the band and say ‘fuck you’ – and I know where I stand! Vulpes almost suggests at a softer approach initially, opening with a dark and eerie line before once again picking up the pace to throw you back into that pit. More urgent than before, this is the sort of track which is going to leave venues as nothing but dust, getting the whole crowd moving and forcing you to join in whether you want to or not. Taking a shot at society in general, once again I found myself listening to things thinking more and more that these guys don’t need to simply focus on music, I think they need to take over government!
Podracer are one of those bands which come up very occasionally but when they do, they make a hell of a splash. The sound they’ve gone for is hard hitting and powerful, yet it still holds melody throughout, making it something which you can listen to, sing along to and generally imagine yourself getting out to see on the live scene. Personally, I can’t wait to see what comes next from these guys as based on this, it’s going to be one hell of a piece of work!
