Priorities
The guys in Priorities recently dropped us a line about their latest album, I Need A Direction, to see what we thought. Formed in 2011, this Michigan based 5 piece progressive pop punk unit have already achieved supporting slots with the likes of The Ataris, and seem to be on the road to the big time. With a penchant for partying, this promises to be an album well worth looking into!
Opening with Behind An Able Man, There Are Always, things get off to a party like start, opening with sound effects from a party and a soaring lead line courtesy of the guitar followed by some hammering drum lines. The mix immediate suggests that this is going to be an album full of catchy hooks, fun moments and tracks which make you want to get a beer and enjoy! Acting as an introduction to the album, this first track paves the way for Directions to come into being, launching us into a punk fuelled pit of hammering guitar lines, soaring vocal lines and drums which are sure to get pits moving. I love the upbeat tempo of this track, immediately showing that this is going to be an album which is going to be a hell of a lot of fun, and a band that are going to be one to get out and see! Fast paced throughout, this track reminds me of a band I saw a long while back called Brodie, a punk band of a similar outlook that produced an EP which I still listen to even now, awesome stuff.
Moving on to This Song’s Called Sup, Barb, the theme of pop punk fuelled rhythms continues, once again launching us into a track which is full of catchy guitar hooks, vocals which will get you singing along and moments which make you remember why you started listening to this style of music in the first place. Upbeat, fuelled by distorted guitar lines and pounding rhythm sections, throughout this track the theme of all out good times continues and keeps you listening to what’s going on. Leading on to I’ll Be Just Fine , the theme doesn’t change and once again, we’re treated to another anthemic track from the Michigan based pop-punk unit. Upbeat and full of catchy hooks once again, this is another track which is going to realise its full potential on the live scene, showing that this is a band to be reckoned with and one that we need to get over to these shores so we can all get out to see them!
Closing with Shegitz Never Showed, there’s one last chance to witness first hand what the band are capable of before the album comes to a close. Opening with a dark and ominous sound before offering up a far more advanced track, this final moment on the album seems to be a showcase of the bands progression, showing their roots whilst also showing the direction they’re headed in from here onwards. As the final track played out I found myself sat back thinking that whilst many bands are content to stick to a certain style, these guys seem intent on moving forward, intent on showing what they’ve got and seem to have the ability to back it up.
I really like the sound that Priorities have got here, it’s got that punk edge which makes it accessible but the hardhitting approach which means it’ll convert harder fans to their style. If you’re looking for an album which is going to get you singing along, make you want to go to a live show, and convert you to a new band, then this could well be them – so get on it!
