Pseudo Nympho

Leeds based PseudoNympho are on a mission to cause spontaneous human pyramids through their hard-rocking grunge style emanating from the Leeds direction. Formed in 2009 before going through some line up changes, the band have released their debut EP (A Door… A Table… A Fist) through Bunnysnot Records (which they run) and are now set to release their next track Pathetic Island Fallacy on the 5th of March with a pre-release date of 27th February. Having been sent through a copy of the track, I figured I’d better check out what was going on.
Hammering guitar lines and pounding drums signal the beginning of the track, creating a sound which harks back to the likes of grunge and punk whilst keeping a sense of freshness and clarity running through things. The vocals alternate between chanted and sung giving a sense of mixed influences to the mix, creating a sound which doesn’t follow the conventions of a particular genre but instead carves its own path through the track. At first listen to the track I found myself questioning what I was hearing, but the more I listened to the track the more I seemed to understand it, there’s so many different influences going on here that it would be impossible to create a track which is simple, instead alternating the timings and styles in which the track progresses, one minute sounding like an older punk moment, then sounding like a stadium rock anthem through the guitar solo, the whole time keeping the beat solid and bass heavy so you don’t just hear the music, you feel every beat and vibration coming out of the speakers.
This track has left me with one massive question in my mind, can it be replicated live. There’s so much going on here that at times you’re not going to be sure where to listen, yet at the same time there’s a real sense of balance running through things, never letting one element out-do another one or becoming overwhelming. The syncopated time signatures which appear from time to time create a sense of prog rock, the vocals give a sense of urgency yet melody, the whole mix forming something which you’re not going to understand at first, but after a while you’re going to crank on louder and louder just to fully immerse yourself in. If this is just one track…..I want to know what else they’ve done!
