PunkANation
I am firmly of the opinion that music is a universal language and the area or region an artist is from is very influential in defining the sound or accent of that music. When asked to review PunkANation, a solo punk project from Singapore, I was suitably intrigued and listened with intent. The excellently titled This Pun is Intended is the first album from the artist and it is ten tracks in duration. It contains offerings such as The Philosofor, and Souled Out! which create a definite punk sensibility with rapid and hard- edged tempos, complete with sharp lyrics. The clever play on words of these song titles nicely compliment the album title, as the puns are seemingly intended. The album also offers softer acoustic numbers such as The Lover, which is an edgy and haunting love song, as well as covers such as The Cure's Love Song. It is a very enjoyable album full of diversity and intelligence with a nice blend of acoustic folk, garage and punk rock.
