Ratchet
Ty from Ratchet was good enough to get in touch via the website recently to see if there was someway we could check out some of their music! Whilst I appreciate the politeness of some people, there’s really no need to ask as I’m always on the look out for new bands to check out, new music to hear! As such, given the chance to check out their album, Numb, I settled down to see what was on offer!
Opening with Changes you’re immediately thrown into a mish mash of solid guitar lines, roaring vocals and solid drumming all backed up with a roving bass line. The sound created straight away is simply massive and testament to these guys being able to play their instruments with aplomb. Kicking into a chorus that can only be described as an anthem, within seconds I found myself singing along to ‘why must my life be going through changes’ and nodding along to the beat set. The vocals vary between clean singing and roaring giving a further edge to the track and making it interesting throughout. The only word I’m left with for this track is wow – it’s awesome and something you would expect from a much more established band!
Title track Numb follows on and opens up much rawer than I was expecting. Keeping the bass high in the mix from the outset, this is a track which makes you want to move! The guitars rove between riffs and picked out lines creating a sound which is both heavy and somehow soft at the same time, again creating those contrasts which make this music such a success. Almost funky at times, this track is a success in the truest sense of the word – on the live scene it must be epic! Million Miles away continues to set the bar high, kicking into an emotionally charged guitar line behind the vocals before moving into a subtle yet heavy riff. Give it one listen and I promise you’ll be singing ‘I’m a million miles away’ along with the band, it’s impossible not to! This track is probably my personal favourite track from the selection, it just works on both a rock and a ballad level – bravo.
One More Season on the other hand is something quite different, opening heavy and hard it moves into a broken down bass section akin to Alice In Chains musically yet keeping those vocals layered over the top. Much heavier and rawer from the outset, this is a track which will sit you firmly back on your ass and make you question whether you imagined Million Miles or not. The highspeed chorus section was a particular highlight of this track for me proving the band are capable of producing different styles of music but always succeeding at what they’re doing. Now You Know is another slower track from the band, opening with an acoustic guitar line and emotionally charged vocals, everything slows down and takes on a more relaxed approach…..until all of a sudden back comes the distortion. Adopting a musical style akin to Disturbed in the guitars, this is a track which will keep you guessing and questioning what you’re hearing from start to finish. This track must be awesome on the live scene I would say as well - it’s got all of the right ingredients right there in the mix.
Needy Bitch follows on and once again you’re thrown into a Drowning Pool esque pit of roaring guitars and vocals backed some rolling drums and bass lines. Funky from the outset, this is a track which will make you move and drink beer – if you only listen to one track make it this one as I promise by the end you’ll be wanting a beer in hand! As it fades and Chaotic Romance kicks in, everything builds (first thought here was Chesney Hawks One And Only but don’t despair!!!) before once again kicking into those adrenaline charged riffs. Taking on a more funky edge once again, this track is another one which I’m sure will whip live crowds into a frenzy. Pay particular attention to the guitar line in this track and how roves around during the chorus, the sound created adds the funky edge to things once again and keeps things progressing forward at one hell of a rate.
Compromise throws a whole new sound into the mix for consideration, opening with a funky guitar line which alternates between the rhythm section and the lead line all backed up by those solid and pounding drums once again. The vocals keep a clean edge throughout this track, retaining their power but somehow sounding much more succinct throughout. Won’t Walk Alone is another complete contrast to everything which has come before, opening with an acoustic line and some emotionally charged and clean vocals, this track comes into being and soon takes on a catchy approach which within seconds will have you singing along to ‘won’t walk alone’. This track is particularly awesome I think because it sounds like so many other bands whilst somehow remaining unique and fresh – it’s awesome to hear.
More closes the album and does it in style – opening heavy and crunchy , the guitars once again take the lead over the rolling drums and vocal line. The track comes into being and you’re faced with a sound which will pummel you throughout whilst forcing you to enjoy it! Catchy once again, this is another example of why you should go out and listen to this band, believe me when I say it will be well worth it!
I am a fully converted fan of Ratchet as of right now, they create heavy music with a funky edge which makes you want to move along with it. Give them a chance and before you know it you’ll be moving along with them as well, joining in with the choruses and demanding more from them as the album finishes. I personally can’t wait to see what comes next from these guys as if they stick to this path, it’s going to be epic!
