Reckon
We were recently contacted by Rading based hard rock band, Reckon, to see what we thought. Formed in 2009 by guitarist Jez and bassist Stu, the guys soon recruited singer Jc and drummer Jason to complete their unit and set about creating their sound. Combining grunge, nu-metal and an all out heavy approach, the band have set out to bring a sense of fun back to the scene, bringing melodic sounds and memorable live performances with them – so I thought I’d best see what was going on!
Opening the selection with Black Rain, a sludgy yet melodic guitar line opens things before pulling in some hammering drums and raucous bass rhythms before the track assumes its full form. Following the conventions of hard rock with an added element of funky goodness, this is music which has been crafted perfectly for the live scene, creating a sound which is going to pull people to their shows and get them moving along with the band. Catchy yet somehow also melodically and technically advanced, this track sets the scene for a band who have worked to refine their sound, worked to create their own outlook on music and ended up with a solid foundation which demonstrates their dedication.
Back To County continues the funky and heavy theme, this time opening sounding similar to a famous Velvet Revolver track but with more venom and punch, almost sounding deeper and more powerful. Spitting the vocals out with a low growl, the whole track comes together to form a track which is going to force you to listen harder, get you out there and make you throw out some mad air guitar shapes! Itchey Trigger Finger is a similar track, once again opening with the funk fuelled guitar lines before building into a track designed to get the crowd involved. Throughout all of the tracks so far, the vocals and guitar have been the real show stealers, but here the bass seems to move up through the mix to combine with the drums and vocals to create a sound which is not only funky and heavy, but also heavy and deep. For a 4 piece band, the sound these guys have achieved is massive, and one which a lot of people are going to be getting in to.
Too Young To Die closes the selection on the bands page, almost coming as one final hurrah to give you a final taste of what you can expect from these guys. Breaking the track down to raw elements to really accentuate the bassline which roves throughout the track, this is another track which needs to be played loud, proud and live! Almost anthem like in the vocals, this is the sort of thing which is going to have everyone singing along, everyone involved and everyone moving along to their sounds!
There’s a lot of potential coming through from these 4 tracks from Reckon, showing that with some work, these guys are going to be a serious force to be reckoned with. Heavy yet full to the brim with melody and catchy hooks, this is the sort of band you dream of seeing on the live scene, one which does what it says on the tin and adds a sense of fun back into your music experiences. The guitar work demonstrates a guitarist who understands his instrument, the bass adding a rumbling sense of power and the drums and vocals combine to grab your attention, keep you involved and make you want to hear more. In short – this is a band to look out for!
