Red Sky
4 piece band from Perth. Formed in 2010, Red Sky are Kurt Pomeroy - Guitar, Joel Pattison – Guitar/Vocals, Cameron Winsor – Drums/Synth and Jimmy Ottaway - Bass.
Red Sky described their music is a mixture of flavors ranging from progressive metal/rock to new prog and a touch of shoe gaze with a greater focus on melody and symphonic composition.
Red Sky started with 4 mates with different musically backgrounds with a taste for travel, surf, the environment and the arts. The strong passion of these 4 interests drove the band together. In turn the name “Red Sky” comes from the west coast sunset often seen to most gropers as red over the ocean.
With a similar love for ambient sounds and heavy riffs, Red Sky didn't take long to produce and finalize their first EP ‘Windows’, with three of the four tracks reaching top 50 on the UNEARTHED charts (‘Echoes’ reaching the highest at 16). Several months into forming the boys gigged around the Perth music scene, holding respectful turnouts at the Rosemount Hotel, Manhattans and Mojo’s to name a few.
I caught up with the band 29th August at Rosemount in Perth.
Perth seems to love Prog Rock even on a Wednesday night. The Rosemount had numbers in attendance, setting a great atmosphere. On arrival the crowd were given a copy of Red Sky’s debut EP Windows.
The guys have all the right ingredients required to produce entertaining progressive rock music. It is not easy to reinvent complex arrangements live on stage. Front man Joel Pattison has angelic vocals which hold strong throughout their set, whilst multi tasking with a vigorous guitar schedule during nearly every song. Kurt Pomeroy is a capable and confidant guitarist as are bassist and drummer, Jimmy and Cameron. Their material maintains your interest and pulls you on to their journey.
They have a strong local fan base and if they can keep evolving their music and performance they will have great potential. Being popular already is a powerful start. The guys shared their vision with Loud- Stuff.
Mel – What’s your opinion on the Perth Music Scene?
Red Sky - We are proud to be part of the Perth music scene, such a great range of music and talent out there producing the likes of Abbe May, Tame Impala, Gyroscope, Karnivool, Birds of Tokyo, Luke Steele, Pendulum, The Triffids just to name a few.
Its incredible the amount of great bands in this town who deserve so much more recognition than they attract. The Perth progressive scene has a solid following though unfortunately its not all that widely recognized through local media and general public. However, the support shown from band to band is incredible. It’s a great scene to be involved in.
Mel – What’s coming up next for the band?
Red Sky - We are currently working on our second EP, with Perth producer Adam Round to be mixed and mastered by Forrester Savell. We are estimating it’s released around April/May 2013.
Long-term aim is to record a studio album.
With everyone’s taste evolving and growing as a band, we are looking at 2013 as being our year, with the release of the second EP and possibility of a tour.
We would love to tour Australia wide and achieve greater recognition to the likes of Karnivool, Dead Letter Circus, Jericco and Enya.
We pride ourselves on earning a loyal fan base and aim for more radio play.
