Reign.Broke.Better
We were put onto Reign. Broke. Better recently to see if we could check some of their stuff out. To set the scene - Reign.Broke.Better are a four piece band from London, this unique band definitely like to mix it up being influenced by Rock/Blues/Funk and Dance music. I was excited by this mixture and to see the likes of Metallica, Guns N Roses and Fall Out Boy on the list of favourite bands, that sold it for me. I listened to five tracks from the band and they were as follows.......
Track one is called Beg Me, straight away I’m drawn into the catchy and hypnotizing tune, there’s a very Ska feeling to it and its amazing. I’m going to throw a statement out there and say that the vocals are the best I’ve reviewed so far, great voice and just eased into the track alongside the drums and guitars. The deeper the track gets, you notice the transformation into a more punk rock track, things get a little heavier, building a new layer. You will find yourself, as I did, singing along to the chorus, even if you didn’t know the words! There’s a strong finish and I loved the cocktail of Ska, Punk Rock and Rock into one. What a start!
Hang Your Head was next on the list and as the drums pounded away and the guitar strummed away in the background, I was almost reliving my teenage years as The Offspring came to mind. The thought of that soon evaporated as that familiar addictive voice kicked in, the tune isn’t as catchy as Beg Me, never the less there are still many different layers to the track which work well. I liked that the guitar gets a bit of airtime along with the drums so that we can appreciate them as well as the vocals. There’s a solid tempo all the way through the track which keeps you on your toes. I think this one could grow on you.
Are You Sure is the third track I had the pleasure of listening to, it starts off very similar to the previous track with the drums and guitars getting the ball rolling. As standard the vocals kick in, and give the band their due, I can honestly say the band are clearly influenced by all of the mentioned genres and this one even has a very Pop feeling to it, I can see all you Rock and Metal heads shaking your head now but try it, you will be surprised. The track follows a simple but effecting drum beat and is consistent with the other tracks, and works like a well oiled machine.
No Good Advice was the last track i listened to, if I’m honest the first three tracks were quite similar and i was looking to see if the band had something different in their locker....... They did! A refreshing start including, tame drumming and simple guitars, you can hear each individual chord which hasn’t really been evident in previous tracks. I was glad the ska side of the band stayed away, leaving it as more of a punk rock track. Everything compliments each other as expected, loved the upbeat nature of the song and as a package the band works well.
I Enjoyed all the tracks I listened to and was impressed with the band as a whole, would still like to see a little bit more variation, maybe see if they can go any heavier and use some Metallica like influences.
