Reventure
Formed around 2 years ago, Reventure are taking the approach of combining electronic music with hardcore and rock, drawing influence from the likes of Enter Shikari and Bring Me The Horizon. Having released two EP’s already as well as a music video for Geronimo, this is going to be a band to be checking out regardless of any preconceptions you might have about the genre in question!
Opening with This Wolfpack Dances To Reggae there’s a solid mixture of rock and dance going on, not like those commercial bands produce but done properly, combining properly heavy metal with a real sense of dance music. The feeling created here is one which is a little confusing at first, you don’t know whether you want to get into a venue to rock out or a club to dance the night away, it’s a carefully mixed combination which after a while, is going to seriously work for a lot of people. Even going so far as to throw in some elements of reggae to keep things moving, the combinations which are here shouldn’t work, yet as I listen I can’t help but sway along, tap my feet and generally nod along, it’s an awesome job the guys have managed to do here!
Jungle Killa moves away from the dance side of things and seems to present us with a solid metal track from the opening moments, but soon we’re back into the combination of different elements once again. Normally I’d be sat here saying this doesn’t work as on paper, it shouldn’t, but again the guys seem to have pulled it off. The contrasting dance and rock, coupled with a chilled out moment midway through all works on different levels, causing your mood to change as you listen to it and altering your perspective on the music bit by bit. Step Aside is another track which at first, seems to be heading firmly towards the rock side of music through the destructive riffs, pounding drum lines and screaming vocal lines which we’re greeted with. Soon enough though we’ve progressed through some electronic effects into another chilled out melee of atmospheric sounds, drums and soft guitar lines, the whole sound washing over you as it builds around you. Moving back into the pacier side of things to finish the track, this is a seriously accomplished track and one which stands out as one of my personal favourites.
Geronimo seems to open as the opposite of the earlier tracks, this time sounding like we’re going to be treated to some euro-pop style dance, but soon blowing all of these preconceptions out of the water with another distortion laden riff and some more of those pounding drum lines. Fast and powerful, this track once again manages to combine heavy and electronic, taking two genres from the opposite ends of the spectrum and turning them into something which is heavy yet something you could also dance to! Closing with Keep Your Sick Behind Your Teeth there’s one last demonstration of why you need to get out there and check out this band, starting off with a heavy assed riff before moving into electronically tinged music, the whole mix forming something which is going to make people question whether they should dance or beat the shit out of each other.
I don’t really know what to say about Reventure other than wow, they’ve achieved something here which I didn’t think anyone ever would – they’ve managed to combine metal and dance music into something which sounds good rather than the usual mainstream crap which we’re subjected to. The tracks here demonstrate a solid awareness of both metal and dance music, showing that there are bands out there who can do both and do them both well!
