Scream At The Sun
Scream At The Sun from Minnesota are described as awakening the music of Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden Metallica and Testament amongst others, throwing out with a real sense of darkness and foreboding which runs through their music. We were recently put onto their tracks to see what we thought of things and with a bio like that, who was I to say no?! The band say that if there’s one thing we do this year then it’s to purchase their album – so I thought I’d better see for myself what was going on.
Fear Thy Neighbour immediately shows off their comparisons and throws us into a mixture of old school metal combined with a new and fresh approach to things, showing that the band have taken their influences and used them to form their own sound, something they’ve done damned well. Packed full of power from the word go, the bands unique ability to take that old approach to metal and rock and combine it with a soaring sense of melody and harmony stands out from the off, immediately setting these guys out from the norm and showing that they’re going to be a serious force to be reckoned with as more people take note of them. The vocals are the key for me, somehow moving between gravelly roars and soaring highs, resulting in a sound which harks back to the glory days of rock and shows that these guys are seriously aiming to bring music back.
Miscreation continues this idea, this time launching us straight into a powerful melee of hammering drums, roaring vocals and pounding guitar lines – the whole mix sounding like a mix of Mushroomhead and Devil Driver – harnessing a real sense of groove into their music through the spitting vocal lines and keeping that feeling alive with the guitar work. To me, this was the stand out track of the three on offer on their press site, there’s just something about it which stands it out and makes it something I want to see live. Powerful, distorted and going at full speed from start to finish, these guys seem to know what they’re doing with these tracks, and they’re doing it with aplomb.
Closing with Everything Returns To Dust we’re shown one final demonstration of the bands ability, closing the selection with another full on rolling mix of hammering guitar lines and rolling drums. From the word go we’re thrown into a pit of devastation, the sort of sound which is going to get pits going all across the venue and the sort of thing which will build these guys one hell of a reputation on the live scene. The vocals once again steal the show here, closely followed by the insane guitar work which we’re presented with – definitely another track to make sure you check out!
Sometimes, when bands say we ‘need’ to get their album I find myself doubting things, but with Scream At The Sun I’m inclined to agree with them – this is an album people need to hear. Powerful guitars throughout combine with hammering drums, resulting in an album which reminds you why you first listened to music, what made you love metal, and where what we hear comes from. I’ve heard these three tracks and am now hooked – definitely a band I’ll be looking out for to hear more from!
