Severed
Ever the sharing type, Brett from Hot Money recently got in touch about a band he thought we should have a listen to. The band in question are Severed, a Nu-Metal outfit from Nottingham! I’ve had a listen to see what I thought!
Opening with Voices In My Head, you’re immediately confronted by a Primus like bass line before bringing in some sludgy guitar lines and soaring vocal lines. The vocals aren’t clean nor roared, instead opting to sound powerful over the solid backing track. What I really like here is that once again the bass line is kept in the mix so you can hear it – this seems to be something which is happening a lot more and it can only be a good thing! The track is kept alive throughout by occasional breaks into harmonic based guitar lines, catchy chorus’s and a solid bass line, all the time keeping the distorted guitars firmly in the spotlight. Growing more frantic towards the end of the track, the music seems to evolve as you listen to it creating a feeling that you’re hearing something new, exciting and pretty special!
Second track Set Me Free follows on in much the same form, opening with a funky lead line underpinned with more of that awesome bass. The drums roll around in the background backing up the vocals, this time almost spat out to make you take note. There’s a real catchy edge to this track which keeps the listener engaged, something which makes the track even more accessible to anyone who hears it. Again this track seems to change as it progresses, the guitar lines and drums changing ever so slightly keeping things fresh and new all the time. I think this track is probably my personal favourite from the selection as the guitar work harks back to the likes of more Southern Rock whilst still somehow sounding more on the heavy side, it’s quite something to behold. It could also be something to do with the solo….but that’s just the guitarist in me speaking!
Final track Time To Say Goodbye opens fast once again, this time adopting a more rolling beat to open things, the bass line once again really driving the beat home. The vocals once again are spat out over the backing track, the drums leading the way and powering everything up even further. What I really liked on this track was the way the guitars seemed to rove around the neck creating another mash up of sounds which all work well together to create a track which can only be described as anthemic, there’s some real potential here.
I love bands like Severed as they sound so fresh and new, there’s no mass production or over mastering here, instead you’re just faced with a band who know how to play their instruments and produce a record in which you can hear everything. Having only heard three tracks from Severed I know for a fact I want to hear more – so get on it lads!
