Shattered Society
We were recently contacted by Mikal from Shattered Society, a Norwegian band who are due to release their first full length album (and of course tour it!) in 2012. Having released an EP this year and then changed their line up, the band have recently released 2 tracks off of their EP with their new singer so we figured it was a perfect time to check them out. Describing their music as Metal/Hardcore/Metalcore (me likey!) I was looking forward to seeing what was on offer from these guys!
Ignoring The Truth opened the selection for me, a track which immediately grabs you by the throat and pummels you to the floor with some insane riffs, hammering drums and one of the most awesome screams I’ve come across. Launching from a relatively slow introduction to a fast paced hammering section full of pounding drumming, pinch harmonics and more of those groove laden riffs – this is a band who are out to get your attention and mean business! As the vocals kick in the track almost takes on a funkier edge, it almost relieves the fast paced all out heaviness yet retains a heavy edge – it’s hard to put into words but hey, it works! Moving from straight forward, to syncopated, through to broken down and back again, this is a track which will keep you guessing throughout but will never disappoint, it’s got all of the right ingredients in the mixing bowl, and instead of following the recipe has created a Frankenstein of epic proportions. Unrelenting until the final second, this isn’t for the faint hearted, but if you like your metal raw and energetic but tinged with melodic harmonies, this is for you!
Second track Blisters Sore is another fast track based over some hammering bass rolls and frantic riffing – the whole mix forming a heavy mix of bass ridden melodies. Energetic once again, this is the sort of track which as soon as it begins, you can picture the crowd just lapping up every single second of it. Slower at times than the previous track, this one oozes heaviness whilst keeping everything very much turned up to 11 and not releasing that iron grip around your throat. I think I prefer this track to the first as well, not in the way that this one is better or the first is worse, but in the way this one is put together – it’s a pure live track! What I really like about the way the band have put it all together as well is how every element can be heard clearly – there’s no overbearing influence in their music, just a well formed mix derived from a band who can play together and do it well!
I guess with Norway the reputation comes first, it’s the home of the darker side of metal and so anything that comes from there should realistically have a damned heavy basis to it. What these guys have done though is take the genre and mix it with their own influences to create tracks which engage you, make you want to throw down and make you listen. The music is heavy sure, but it’s melodic and well written – and based on this I cannot wait to hear the full release next year!
