Shot Down Stay Down
These guys from York got hold of me and asked if I could review their EP. Seeing as I’m a nice guy, I thought why the hell not! I logged onto Facebook, found their page and checked out the good stuff! Five guys, one mission......... to create heavy music! The band too many influences to list, but they describe their genre as 'filthy, filthy death core' so was more than a little intrigued as to how it would work out. Anyway here’s what I thought.
The first track I picked from the EP was Degenerate. A fast paced and punchy start met me, and I instantly found myself thinking of an introduction that Bullet For My Valentine would have been pleased with. What came next shattered my image of Bullet. I was thrust into a whirlwind of screaming, heavy drum beats, and guitar solos. There are many variations in tones within the instruments and the vocals and this works well, constantly changing the image of the track and setting foundations for things to come. I liked the ending of the track and thought that it shows the band have the ability to adapt to different styles if need be.
Evolution of Evicseration is as 'filthy, filthy, death core' as it comes. The track starts at 100mph, throwing you back in your seat, concussing you with blow after blow of pounding drum beats, a sinister guitar tune and mind shattering vocals. The tempo continues to be relentless until about three quarters of the way into the track, there’s a ceasefire of vocals and the drums and guitars are left to seduce the listener with addictive guitar riffs and rolling drum beats that echo for what seems like an eternity after. There’s a strong finish to the track that I really enjoyed, so look out for that!
Nightmare In The Flesh was the third track I listened to off the guys EP. A guitar riff pierces the skin from the beginning. There’s a contrast in vocals with lighter ones fighting raw, from the depths heavy vocals. This kinda reminded me of SOAD but on a much heavier scale! There’s an awesome catchy tune pretty much all the way through, and there are distinct variations in pace that work well with the different style of vocals. Loved the little five second guitar solo midway through the track, just adds something a little different, there are also some solid drums beats to listen out for towards the end of the track.
Tyrants kicks off with a distorted guitar riff and a powerful throbbing drum beat, which battles away in the background. Screeching vocals soon evolve to full blown roar lifting you off your seat. The tempo of the track is pretty fast, occasionally changing with the chorus. In the mid-section there’s a duel between the drums and guitars which adds a new level to the track. When this dies down, things get much slower, still with the same roaring vocals. I like how the band can slow things down but still keep the same edge to the track all the way through to the end.
ADDITION BY DAVE - I've really liked what I've heard from Shot Down Stay Down, their music is not only heavy but also complex and well put together. It's more my style of music than Aarons I think, but even he has been able to connect with it. I'm pretty sure I speak for both of us when I say that I want to hear more from these guys, making sure they stick with the recipe they've got!
Shot Down Stay Down are on Facebook for all their tracks to be heard, so check out their page HERE.
