Shouting Signals
Garry from SAN PR dropped us a line the other day to let us know about the upcoming EP, Stand Your Ground, from Essex post hardcore unit, Shouting Signals. As a band who have already been compared to the likes of You Me At Six, 30 Seconds To Mars and Architects, the guys seem primed to hit the big time and break out into the centre of your attention. Having formed in 2011, the guys have gone from strength to strength with their approach of ‘work first, play later’, working to get their name out there, develop their style, and take over the world. Seeing as they’re so dedicated to pushing their music to the next level, we thought it only right that we check things out for ourselves to see what’s going on!
Never Run Away kicks things into being for us, opening with a pounding drum line before ushering in the bass heavy mix of elements to fully get things in motion. Immediately adopting a sound which is sure to get people moving and chanting along, this opening track sets things up nicely, showcasing the sort of style we can expect and demonstrating the bands ability to hook listeners in from the word go. Melodic as well as powerful throughout, there’s a real sense of catchy hooks flowing through things here, allowing the listener to get involved with the lyrics as well as the backing music, something which is sure to stand these guys in damned good stead moving forwards. Breathe In, Breathe Out follows much the same conventions, this time opening with an intricate guitar line (god damn guitarists and their ability beyond mine!) before launching us once more into the melodic and catchy mix of elements. The chorus here is without a doubt the key, offering up the sort of thing which is sure to get people singing along, crowds chanting and people moving, it’s like stadium rock for the new generation.
Moving more towards the heavier side of the spectrum for One Forty the tone of things shifts slightly, this time moving towards a darker place, a place where the fuzzy guitar work takes the lead and adds a real sense of power to proceedings. Powerful throughout yet once again, full of intricacies and hooks, this track is like a hybrid of 30 Seconds To Mars, Atreyu and Architects all rolled into one, it’s heavy without being over bearing, yet melodic without being poppy – a clever mix indeed. All My Answers sticks to this recipe, once again managing to draw on their influences to craft a sound which is off heavy, yet powerful enough to satisfy that craving for heaviness. Melodic and catchy, this track is a high point on the record, and the sort of track I could see being released as a single to entice everyone to listen into the EP – it’s got that ‘break through’ quality to it which would work well for the guys – one to check out for sure.
Closing with The Penitence the guys finish on a high, closing with a summary of the EP up until this point through their combination of heavy guitars, intricate lead lines, soaring vocals and pummelling rhythms. As a final track on an EP this does what it should, leaves the audience wanting more but safe in the knowledge that they’ve just witnessed something pretty damned cool – a solid close to a solid EP.
I don’t know what I was expecting when I went into this EP from Shouting Signals, but it wasn’t this, I’ve been pleasantly surprised. All too often we get caught up in the genre that the band say they’re in, but with these guys I don’t think it matters, what you’ve got here is an EP which hits all the notes, hammers home the message and reminds you what intricate, interesting music sounds like. Definitely a band to be keeping an eye on, and one I want to make sure I check out this year!
