Sick With Silence - NEW TRACKS!
We featured Sick With Silence a while back, so when they dropped us a line about some new stuff they’ve been working on, I jumped at the chance to check out how things were going. They were good enough to email me over the tracks so I thought it only right I share my thoughts about them with the world!
Opening with 26 Winters there’s an immediate ominous feeling coming through things, the track building into a dark yet simple piano line to get things going – not letting you know too much about what is to come but giving enough away to make you want to know more! The vocal line which comes into being accompanies the piano line and contributes further to the sense of unknown, prolonging the start to make you listen harder and harder – then it all comes together. Adding in electronic elements to warp the track into a NIN style melee of darkness and power, it’s one hell of an opening and demonstrates that these guys have been doing some serious work! Building up to the crescendo which ends the track, this may well be the first of the selection but my god, this is some serious stuff!
Enemies Of Reason comes up next and once again continues the strange opening idea, this time building on that electronica idea momentarily before launching you into a pounding mix of drums, guitars and synth – it’s like taking metal, combining it with electronic elements and then adding some more metal just to make sure! The bass heavy rhythms which flow out of this track are enough to shake your house to the foundations, yet you can’t help but crank it up louder and louder as it progresses – this is going to be a band to get out and see! Notion somehow manages to continue this theme, once again launching us into a melee of electronic sounds combined with hammering guitars, rolling drums and hooks which pull you in whether you’re ready or not. The vocals are one of the biggest contrasts here, coming in softer than you’d expect but this only makes you listen harder, wanting to know what’s coming next and what they’re going to do. This track is my own personal favourite from the new ones, there’s just something about it which I really enjoyed – definitely one to check out.
Closing with Beautiful Illusion there’s one last chance to bear witness to what a band can do when they really set their mind to it. Opening dark and electronic once again, there’s a real sense of movement flowing through this track, almost as if it could be played in a dance club or a rock club and get the same reception at each. This final track on the album leaves no doubt in my mind that this is a band who have found their stride, found their style and are now ready to unleash themselves upon the world – just make sure you’re ready for them!
Sick With Silence have been an exciting band since we first heard them, but this new stuff seems to have taken that to a whole new level. The advance in their music, their style and the sheer production on the tracks is incredible, and to me suggests that this is going to be a band which you’ll need to be keeping an eye out for in the very near future – highly recommended!

Sick With Silence
I’ve never had Ireland down as a country which a lot of music comes out of, I don’t know why but there! This has all been thrown into disarray of late after recently featuring a band from Ireland, and now being contacted by Sick With Silence from Belfast. The chaps were good enough to send me through some tracks so I’ve had a listen to see what I thought.
The Scene is Dead, Long Live the Seen opens proceedings and sets the bar high immediately, pounding guitars all linked together by slamming drums and electronic noises underpin vocals which move from soft to roaring. Melodic and well jointed, this track is catchy in ways that major bands can only ever aim to achieve, it ticks every box on the review sheet from heavy, melodic, unique….well, you get what I mean! As the track progresses I found myself thinking that it was going to be a hard job to follow this track, it’s incredibly accomplished for a new band.
Our Chosen Suicide follows on, building up through electronic sounds into another relentlessly heavy riff underpinned by pounding drums and bass, alternating between this heaviness and softer slower sections. The contrasts created by these sections creates a track which is melodic, heavy and emotional all at the same time. Bringing in electronic elements behind the key instruments this track creates a sound which is quite simply massive, put it through the speakers and crank them up and every single floor board will vibrate along with it. As the track finishes and Psalm kicks in, the sound becomes more raw and electronic, using effects to fade the sound from one speaker to another, through headphones it’s insane. Using digitally enhanced vocals for the track, the sound seems to be a combination of heavy metal, electronic pop and catchy stadium rock, it’s impossible to define. Kicking into an industrial style chorus, this track is yet another triumph and probably my favourite off of the album. The vocals are powerful yet restrained, the instruments well played and the over all sound confusing yet accessible from the outset, I love how strange yet good this is!
Final track In Everything But Name finishes the selection in style, opening with electronic noises which will have you reaching for the volume control to make sure you can hear everything before kicking into an emotionally charged and laid back guitar riff, using the bass and drums to give the track further depth. The track builds through these sections, hinting at kicking into something more but holding back, leaving the listener wanting more. Finally, at nearly 4 minutes the track finds its firm footing and powerfully kicks in becoming more emotional and powerful than ever before. This track finishes the album in ways I can’t describe, I found myself going back over the tracks 7 or 8 times to make sure I hadn’t imagined what I’d just heard, it’s epic.
Sick With Silence were borne out of the demise of band The October Connection and I have never been so glad that one band stopped and another started, the sound is unique, the music powerful and the tunes catchy. These guys stand a real chance of being massive providing they continue on this route as even now I wouldn’t be surprised to hear their music playing along side big names at a festival. I sincerely hope to hear a lot more of these guys!
