I caught up with the band Villa Nightclub Perth on 7th June.
The venue was near capacity on a very stormy Perth night, time for some Perth Emo culture myth busting. The crowd were not what was expected at all. The age demographic was majority late teens, early twenties. The hair colour was predominantly Black, as were the clothes. All the fans had impressive amounts of tattoo’s and piercings, carefully coiffured hairstyles, perfected make-up and massive smiles! Being one of only a few blondes there and of more mature mileage than absolutely everyone, I didn’t feel uncomfortable at all. There were no sad withdrawn characters, within this selection of ‘scene’ kids. The atmosphere was infectious.
Silverstein entered the stage and rocked the venue for the full 1hr and 15 mins. They played a total of 20 various tracks from their entire back catalogue in that time. For those of you who are not familiar with their ‘Short Songs’ Album (Released this year) each track only last 90 seconds, thus they could fit in quite a few.
The crowd displayed perfect mosh etiquette, and even though it looked dangerous, no one was hurt. The fans sang the lyrics word for word and admired their hardcore hero’s with wide eyes. The depth of love and understanding of their Perth fans would have humbled this Canadian Band.
The sound quality throughout the set was good, their material has a really solid sound with 3 guitars vigorously engaged with fast and loud drums. Shane’s voice is diverse, he can perform the slower melodic vocals and then switch effortlessly into screamer with the song requires. Shane brings on his acoustic guitar for the encore and performs solo for the intro, before being joined by the rest of the band. These guys have kept the same line up for 11 years, the professional rapport gives credit to their sound. The feedback after the show was incredibly positive, there are a lot of hardcore fans in Perth and for them this gig had been a long time coming.
Big SHOUT OUT to Adam Smith at Villa Night Club, love the venue and a massive Thank you for looking after us.
