Six Stories Unknown
We were recently contacted by William from CX Management about a band from Sweden called Six Stories Unknown. We’ve not featured an awful lot from that part of the world so I figured it was only right to get something up and posted about the music they’ve got to offer. Describing themselves as easycore/pop-punk I figured this could be the perfect remedy to sooth an aching soul….now enough of that deep crap, let’s listen to see what’s on offer!
Opening with We Won’t Fall Asleep you’re immediately thrust into a catchy and jumpy melee of distorted guitar lines, pounding drums and a hammering bass line before the clean and melodic vocals step in to take the lead. What I really like about the opening of this track is how the different vocals contrast each other yet work in perfect harmony to create a further level of depth which you wouldn’t normally get with bands of this style. The track follows the constraints of pop-punk by keeping the vocals clean but throwing in the occasional punky break down, the guitars really leading the way as the drums roll around in the background, again this further develops this track into something pretty damned epic! From the second it kicks off to the second it finishes this is a catchy track, it’s a track which is easy to listen to and it’s a track which any band out there would be proud of, it just works on different levels but makes you want to be stood watching the band clutching a beer – great start!
She Said Happily Ever After follows on at number 2, a track which once again opens frantically and keeps the pace going throughout. Palm muted guitars roll around your ears as you listen, one hammering out the riff and the other offering up some soaring lead lines far beyond what you would expect from a band like this. The vocals are once again kept clean and to the point throughout, the end result being another track which is massively accessible and easy to listen to. What’s really striking here is how the band add in elements which technically shouldn’t work in pop-punk (the lead lines and double bass) but they do, further testament to these guys ability. As the track fades out and Still Carry On comes into being, this theme is very much continued. Once again the guitar really steals the show under the vocals, the drums backing everything up and the bass pounding away to keep the sound deep and almost heavy. Catchy once again, this track reminds me of the likes of Zebrahead, it’s catchy to the point it will immediately hook you in and keep you engaged from start to finish. If I had to pick a favourite this track would probably be it as well, the track is the perfect combination of distortion and clean and quite simply, just works!
Fly is another track which has all of the hooks and catchy elements which you would expect from a band like this, opening as it means to go on but throwing in more of those awesome lead lines to keep everyone interested. Another catchy chorus greets you soon enough which is sure to have you singing along after a couple of listens. My only question on this track is the roaring vocals which are there in the background from time to time, I’m not sure they fit in as well as they should, and to be honest I reckon this track works fine without them, but it’s a small point. As the final track, We’ll Take Over The World comes into being, the whole lot is really summed up. Opening with synth sounds before an acoustic guitar line leads us onwards, almost dark and mysterious. For me, this is the point behind the band, they can play damned awesome music and are clearly well accomplished musicians. This track is by far the heaviest (and shortest) of the selection on their facebook page and to me, is a case of showing the world that if they put their hands to it, they can effectively do what they want!
I’ve become quite wary of the ‘pop-punk’ label of late as I’ve found a lot of bands using it purely because they don’t know where else to place themselves, but I think these guys have nailed it. Their music is catchy, the tracks hook you in and they can all perform as one hell of a combined unit. This is music which you want to kick back with a few beers to when it’s being played live, and I for one hope they manage to get over here for some gigs so I can get out there and check them out! Give this music a chance as personally, I think this could well be a winning recipe going on here!
