Skarlett Riot
Licolnshire based Skarlett Riot, a 4 piece rock band from Scunthorpe, describe themselves as blending uptempo rock music with catchy hooks. Having already gained rave reviews from the likes of Kerrang Radio and Metal Hammer, I thought it only fair to have a listen to see what I thought after they were brought to my attention.
Their selection of tracks on FB opens with Never Believe It, a bassy uptempo number opening with slamming drums, a very prominent bass line and thrashing guitar lines. Slowing down into an almost Guns N Roses-esque guitar line once the vocals kick in, the track immediately takes form and powers onwards. The female vocalist (Skarlett) adds another depth to the track, moving away from generic rock and putting their own unique stamp on the music. The track moves from carefully crafted section to section, chucking a guitar solo in for good measure and doing exactly what they say they do from start to finish.
Second track Take It All follows on where the last left off, continuing to sound deep and bassy as it moves forwards, this time using the lead line to add another level of depth to the track. As the track powers on with chuggy guitars and those stunning vocals you’re lured into a sense of belief that this could just be generic rock, then the chorus kicks in and changes everything – the vocal line follows the guitar line and changes the style of the track completely to an almost frantic edge. As the break kicks in the solo takes over and once again this band show everything they’re made of – musicians who know what they’re doing! As Draw The Line kicks in the tempo becomes slower, the guitar and vocals take the lead and the whole track takes on a far more emotional tone. Remaining deeply rooted in the sound created thus far, this track is more of a ballad than the other tracks yet it somehow retains that anger and frantic edge which the other tracks created.
Final track, The Answer, reverts back to the original sounds of the band – once again picking up the pace and using every element of the band to create the mash up of sounds and catchy hooks which I’ve come to expect. Again this track is classically rooted in rock but with those catchy hooks which the band promise from the outset.
From the outset this band has surprised me, providing sections of songs which I didn’t expect to kick in and song writing techniques beyond most bands starting out in their careers. Whilst you could consider them to be mainstream rock, their music is inoffensive and thoroughly enjoyable – I’m intruiged as to whether they stick to this route or whether they change direction – based on what’s here they’ve pretty much got their options open I think.
