Spine Extraction
Charlotte based Spine Extraction recently tweeted @Loud-Stuff with their new video attached to it, and I was so blown away I got in touch to send me some more details about them. Formed in 2010, this 3 piece Death Metal band create brutal, dark music, focused on aggression – which sounds perfect for someone who needs something to calm them down! Taking the lead from their bio, I had a listen.
Opening with Supressing The Rage, there’s a sense of electronic sound effects first off, a bass line carrying them forward before ushering in some spoken vocals. Setting the tone dark from the outset, immediately I found myself hitting the volume up button to make sure I heard everything. Ushering in a sludgy guitar line over the drums before bringing in the vocals, I love how the track hints at its full power, almost teasing you as it grows, not allowing everything to kick off until the moment the band are ready – and when it does – Jesus Christ! Rolling double bass abounds, hammering riffs, screaming vocals contrast roaring, bass heavy rhythms shake you to your core – I mean there’s heavy, then there’s this. Unrelenting throughout, this is a track which is going to grab you by the throat and throw you head first into a pit of pure aggression, before almost soothing you with the slowed down bass laden sections that first began the track. This is one hell of an introduction to a band and demonstrates how well these guys can craft tracks, keeping you guessing as to what is going to come next.
Abomination follows on, this time not allowing you a moment to catch your breath before throwing you head first back into that pit of insanity. Syncopated drums hammer away as the vocals steal the show, managing a roar which will surely make anyone out there jealous! Raw, powerful and downright heavy once again, make no mistakes going into this, this is going to give you nightmares. What really amazed me about this track though was how, just as you thought it couldn’t get any heavier, you’re launched into a section of blistering drums, screeching vocals and more bass rhythms than you can shake a stick at – it’s mind blowing! Fleshless almost comes as a shock as it opens following the last track, slower and more restrained than before at first, you can’t help but feel this isn’t going to last. Soon enough it happens, once again the pace picks up and the hammering distortion returns to make sure you’ve not forgotten about it, once again managing to create a sound which is insanely heavy yet well put together at the same time. In all, this is probably my personal favourite track from the selection on the bands FB page, there’s just something about it which keeps you moving, keeps you guessing and keeps you wanting more.
Closing the selection with Eternity Awaits (the video to which can be seen below), you’re left with no doubt that this is a band who are out to do some serious damage. More hammering riffs and some of the most insane drumming you’ll hear, this is one which once again isn’t for the feint hearted, instead one which is going to punish you for listening whilst it’s playing, then make you feel good about the pain you’ve just gone through. As a closing track it does its job perfectly for me, leaves me wanting to hear more from these guys and moreover, to see them on the live scene!
Spine Extraction isn’t exactly the sort of band that fans of Justin Beiber are going like, it’s more the sort of band that will kill them to be honest, probably explaining why I like them so much! There’s senses of other bands here for sure, which is bound to happen through influences, but without a doubt this is one of the best put together heavy bands I’ve come across for a while. They don’t rely on screaming for the sake of screaming, instead build the elements together to keep you listening, and all I’m left with is the desire to hear it all again!
