Station and the Monster
Station And The Monster are made up of three guys from Newark, CA from the good ol' United States of America. They originally formed in Philadelphia back in 2010 and relocated to explore new music and give it to people that want to hear it. They produce a sound they like to call 'space punk' with a raw, rock base. These are definitely a band to see live. Here’s how it went down.
Space Twat was the first track on the list. An energetic and thumping start get proceedings underway. There’s a good feel to this track, hurtling along at a relentless pace. The riffs being thrown out here shake the inner core. The drum beats are to the point and have a bit of charisma about them. The vocals enter the fray and add a different dimension to the track taking it to a new level. The tempo slows slightly with the introduction of the vocals; however they are raw and soon drag the speed up to what is acceptable for them. This is definitely a track to see live as it is pretty fast paced and fairly heavy.
This Dirty Love was the second track I chose from the list. A short distorted guitar solo gets things under way, with the same thunderous drum beat soon joining in the fun to form a whirlwind of pleasure. The vocals are added to the mixture, as if adding flour to a cake. They fill the core, giving the track a sense of volume. Again they are raw allowing them to soar to new heights, taking things to the next level. What I liked about this track compared to the previous one was the real change in tempo towards the end. The vocals die out leaving the guitar riffs and drums to battle it out for center stage. There is also a similar change in the middle of the track where you see a softer side to the vocals.
Discussed/Disgust was the third track and the shortest out of the four I chose to review. Everyone likes a bit of variety in their life. A simple drum beat is the focal point at the start, soon accompanied by a very simple guitar riff. This was a different type of start compared to the previous couple of tracks and it worked well, it was catchy, punchy and did the right things before the vocals came to life. There’s a nice kinda Indy feel to this song, and with the vocals coming to life, the sounds produced confirmed that. The tempo isn’t relentless but enough for you to worry about when you can take your next breath. This is fairly consisted throughout, just lacks a little variation for me, however, that’s being ultra-picky.
I finished up the selection by choosing the track Endless. A charismatic drum beat and honest guitar riff work in tandem to kick things off. The vocals here are a lot softer than some of the other tracks, therefore showing that variation and mix that I bang on about so much. It works well and that’s the main thing. The foundations of the track are solid, nothing gets over complicated and to me this would be a great finishing track for an album or a closing song at a live gig. You can follow it along with ease, the mid-section without the vocals, builds the suspense well. There was something about this part of the track that just gripped me and I really appreciated the talents of the guys as individuals.
Top band right here! There’s something for almost every rock fan. The changes in tempo work well, the riffs are solid and the drum beats stay with you long after the tracks finished. Look forward to hearing more from these guys.
