Steve Wilson - Every One Of Us
I’ve featured Steve Wilson (known under the artist name of Wilson) before having checked out some of his recordings, and of course his live set at Leeds Metal Fringe last Summer, so when he dropped me a message on facebook the other day letting me know about his new track, Every One Of Us, due out on the 1st of July 2013, I was interested to see what he’d been up to. As a musician who takes influence from the likes of Trent Reznor, Eddie Vedder, Bob Dylan and Chris Cornell, he offers up a varied style and approach which is sure to appeal to fans of all sorts of music, so what of the new track?
Soft and acoustic from the word go, the soothing guitar lines on offer seem to flow out of the speakers, backing up the gravelly yet accessible vocals of Wilson himself. Deep and emotionally charged from the word go, there’s a sense of 90’s grunge flowing through things here, demonstrating the influences Wilson looks up to when writing, and how they impact on his musical style. Stunning guitar work and a simple yet effective approach throughout crafts a track that’s easy to listen to and thought provoking, the sort of thing you’ll put on and just sit back and listen to, allowing the melodies to flow over you and engulfing you in a sense of soothing calm. It’s striking that as the track comes to a close, you realise that all you were given was a vocal line, a guitar line, and a tambourine – showing once and for all that simplicity really is the key.
Having witnessed Steve play live for myself, I was fully aware of his ability when I went into this track, but I didn’t expect to hear a track of quite this calibre. From start to finish you’re lured in and kept listening, the tones flowing through you, working into your mind and offering you a taste of something special, something unique, and something you want to hear more of. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Wilson is one to watch – and this is a track that secures that once again.
