Stray From Glory
We were recently contacted by Stray From Glory, a 6-piece band focused on the raw energy and impact of heavy music as well as the shmakaroo (???) of electro music, fusing them together to produce their own individual style. Formed in 2010, these guys have spent their time together touring around Ireland and building up their fan base, as well as recording their EP, Love Lane. We were sent through a link so figured it was only right we check out what was going on!
Opening with Victoria the EP gets off to a heavy start, immediately showing off the bands ability to combine heavy and electronic, hammering on into Dogs to get the EP going fully. Once again managing to combine the heavy approach with a serious dose of electronic elements, the mix forms something which sounds accessible whilst still managing to pack one hell of a punch. Heavy guitars combine with soaring synth lines, the mix continuing to push the boundaries of what should be possible from this style of music, and showing us that when a band take proper heavy and add to it, it can sound damned good indeed. Pounding drums, roaring vocals, hammering bass rhythms and distorted guitars that will send shivers down your spine, this track has it all, and is sounding damned good so far.
Title track Love Lane follows on, almost calming things down for a moment to get it going and showing us that there’s more to these guys than first meets the eye. The soft synth line which opens the track soon combines with a melodic guitar line and rumbling bass rhythm to form something atmospheric, deep and powerful, the sort of thing that’s calm and reflective but that suggests there’s a lot more to come still. Soon returning to the heaviness that started this EP, this track moves from soft to hard, once again demonstrating the bands understanding of the genre and how to combine their different approaches with aplomb. To me, this stands out as a serious high point on the EP, and a track to make sure you check out for sure – quite simply it’s awesome. Closing with Broken Home the EP finishes on another full on and in your face track, closing with one final smash to the face and showing that there’s a lot more to come from these guys. The bass line is the key to this track, adopting a rhythm that’s almost catchy as it progresses and shows us that this isn’t just power, it’s also got a real sense of melody thrown into the mix along with it all – and is something we should all be taking note of.
When I saw the bio on the band saying electro and rock my first thoughts were Pendulum style stuff, but this is way beyond that, this is a whole new level, and something I can see myself thoroughly enjoying a lot more of. Stray From Glory may just be setting out on their journey in music, but there’s a serious amount of potential here, definitely a band I see big things for.
