Talanas
We were recently put onto the spanking new vinyl release from UK metal act Talanas, to see what we thought of things. Formed in the wake of industrial act Interlock, the band got together, released a 3 track debut in the form of ‘Reason & Abstract’, and immediately got some serious attention. Described as a progressive quartet, these guys have been featured in the likes of Classic Rock Presents Prog and Terrorizer, have been recommended by the likes of Mr Dom Lawson, My Dying Bride and Akercocke, and now have this preview release of two tracks off of their upcoming album Daylight to present to the world. Seeing as they already seem to be on the up, I figured we’d better check out what was on offer to see if we could help get word out there!
Kicking into being with B-Side Beloved Whore we’re led into a dark and mysterious mix, the drums building the feeling of the track whilst echoed vocals push things to a higher level, keeping the track growing as it progresses. Dark sounds echo around the mix, offering up a sound akin to the likes of Type O Negative in some respects, yet with a more restrained and less in your face approach to things. Haunting and dark yet somehow strangely melodic at the same time, this track is one which is going to sit you back, get you listening, and keep you guessing as to what’s going to come next. To me, there’s something about this track that has a strange hook to it, the sort of thing which leaves you unable to do anything once the track has started, other than to simply listen to what’s going on – it’s a clever mix for sure, and one which works.
Corpseflower on the other hand is the complete opposite of the B side, this time launching into being with hammering drums, screaming vocals and enough guitar work to level an entire town. Growling vocals soon meet the distorted guitar work, forming a sound which sticks to the heavy side of the spectrum, whilst at the same time keeping an almost progressive approach to things at the forefront of operations. Continuing to offer up surprise after surprise, the track abounds with distorted riffs, pinch harmonics, and vocals which will have you reaching for that volume up button, it’s a heavy assed track yet at the same time, manages to keep a real sense of melody flowing through it, very clever indeed. My personal favourite out of the two tracks on offer, this is one to make sure you check out, one to get down to see live, and one that you know you’re going to return to time and time again.
Talanas have put together a hell of a record here, with an A-Side that simply hammers the shit out of all of the elements in the band to form a heavy yet melodic sound, and a B-Side designed to offer an insight into the other side of the band, and achieves it with aplomb. I may have only heard two tracks from Talanas, but this is a band I’ll be making a point of keeping an eye on from here on, definitely one to watch!
