Tallowah
Southend On Sea based Tallowah recently got in touch about their music to see whether we could get something up and posted for them. These guys are a departure from our usual style as they’re a Reggae band, not something I’ve heard a lot of but I figured I should give it a try!
Opening with Held Down you’re immediately thrown into a sun filled trumpet and bass fuelled mixture, the vocals kicking into further develop the track. Chilled out and laid back this is music which you’ll want to listen to when the sun’s shining and you’ve got a beer in your hand! The chorus kicks into a catchy section, once again brining those trumpets back in and driving everything home with that roving bass line and clean vocals. This music is a pure summer track – even sitting here with it raining outside things feel warmer just from the music.
Liberation opens in much the same way, once again driving that bass line home and using the brass section to further fuel things, this time topping it up with a lead line as well. Breaking down from the intro the vocals kick in to lead the way through the track, the bass still remaining the driving force behind everything and once again creating that chilled out vibe. Catchy once again, this is probably my personal favourite track from the selection, it’s just got so many classic reggae elements here that you’ll want to sit back, crank the stereo up, open a beer and let the time just pass you by. As the track fades and What’s Real kicks in, once again you’re faced with a roving bass line to lead you by the hand through the track. Once again keeping the guitars low in the mix (but still there all the way through) and driving with the vocals and bass, this track has echoes of Marley all through it. You can picture the sun shining, the white sandy beach and palm trees – having gone into this album from a metal one it’s such an amazing contrast and one which will sit you back and make you realise there is other music out there. Continuing to be chilled up until the last second, anyone who is not chilled out by this track is a more frantic person than me for sure!
Final track Dub Nation finishes of the selection here perfectly, incorporating all of the elements featured in the tracks so far from lead lines, brass sections and clean vocals right through to that awesome bass line again. The mix on the vocals varies here causing the vocals to really stand out against all of the backing music. Also, check this track out through headphones and listen to how everything bounces around from one ear to the other – there’s some serious thought which has gone into the mixing and mastering process here. Once again chilled out, this track leaves you content and fulfilled, at the same time still wanting more!
I’m not normally a fan of Reggae music to be honest, it’s one of those genres which sort of passed me by and I never got into. These guys on the other hand are a band who I’ve really been taken by, they’re chilled out yet somehow add in elements which you don’t expect such as lead lines and odd mixing techniques. In all I’ve really been pleasantly surprised by what I’ve heard here and sincerely hope I hear a lot more from the band!
