Tattermask
This band is a four piece, female-fronted Heavy Rock group with intricate guitar-work and educated lyrics. They come from Charlotte in the United States and have amassed an impressive following on Facebook since their first release in 2008. Tattermask have a range of influences, some of the bigger names being Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold and Evanescence. These contribute towards the Rock/Alternative Metal sound that they are putting out there.
Burn was the first track I got my grubby little mits on. An insanely heavy, bone crunching guitar riff, gets the ball rolling. Setting a tone for the track that resembles hell itself. Raw, piercing vocals engulf you as soon as the first lyric is sung. They smooth the pallet waiting for the riffs to tear it up again. The changes in tempo work really well, also the variations in the dynamics of the track allow you to appreciate the talents of the band as individuals. This first track is definitely a 'does exactly what it says on the tin' kinda track.
The beginning of the second track, Lullaby, is a complete contrast to 'Burn'. The dark, heavy opening riff seems like a distant memory as a chilled, melodic guitar riff slides in. The pace is tame; the vocals are fresh and sound incredible. They put you in a trance, strangling you into submission before the riff turns heavier, breaking the hold and throwing you into a downward spiral. With this the pace quickens, the guitar solo midway through is quality and gives the track even more volume. You can almost smell the strings smoking as its taking place. Gotta say this was my favourite track as everything works well from top to bottom.
Rage starts off with a chilling, yet mellow guitar riff, supported by a sinister, heavy bass line. The introduction of the vocals brings a skin crawling riff to the table that turns the tempo up and adds body to the track. The vocals are quality; they complement the softer riffs perfectly yet still hold their own on the heavier ones too. There is tempo change after tempo change, unwilling to let you settle into any sort of rhythm. Towards the end of the track I loved the rolling drum beat and vocals which entice a final guitar riff to take over and lead the song over the finishing line.
And last but not least track number four was Fallen Paradise. The previous three tracks had all been different in slightly different ways so I was looking forward to finding out what I was going to get here. A charismatic lone guitar riff starts the track off, it comes across as very tame for a short time until a smashing drum beat kicks in, seemingly bringing the riff to life, turning it dark and dangerous. As the vocals enter the frame, there is a slight Evanescence feel to them; however it’s Evanescence with a twist and a bit of bite. They do sound incredibly, just like the last three tracks. There is a real punchy feel to the track and I found myself caught up in the guitar solo three quarters the way through.
A top, top band. Every track is well constructed and is built by layers upon layers of solid riffs, thunderous drums and those damn good, addictive vocals. Like I commented earlier, these four talented people do exactly what they say they are going to do and don’t hold back. Look forward to hearing more from them and don't forget to give them a like on their Facebook page.
