The Asphodells
THE ASPHODELLS – RULED BY PASSION DESTROYED BY LUST ALBUM
Released 18 March 2013, Rotters Golf Club label
Partnerships have been the mainstay of Andrew Weatherall’s career and he has a habit of drawing the best out of his collaborators. Witness his Dub Chapter Remix of Primal Scream’s ‘Jailbird’, or the Sabres of Paradise Haunted Dancehall album. Ruled By Passion Destroyed By Lust provides further such sonic fuel. A trippy, bass-heavy beast, with one eye on the soundtracks market and the other on electronica’s history, it begins by declaring itself ‘Beglammered’ and then pauses near the end to ask for ‘One Minutes Silence’. Weatherall knows he and his audience have grown up and want something more, than just the usual flashy sonic punch which most electronica these days provides. “History”, “culture” and “atmosphere” were apparently key words in the recording of this collection. Each oozes through the grooves leaving its’ own distinctive flavour. This is the album Primal Scream should have made after Screamadelica and we are truly honoured to have it around now.
