The Deli's Mix
We were recently contacted by Rich Zbaraski from The Deli’s Mix to let us know about some tracks which they’ve put together. Formed in 2009 initially before undergoing several line up changes to become a finalised band in 2011, the band drawn influence from the likes of Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Foo Fighters, Muse and Jimi Hendrix as well as the classical backgrounds of Rich and Andy. As such, I figured it was only right I check out what was on offer from these guys!
Shamans Dance introduces us to the band, opening with a bass heavy rhythm that permeates into your soul, immediately grabbing your attention and leading you into the track. The vocals come in clean and elevate the track further to a level, almost cutting through the distorted guitar work and hammering drum beat. What’s most striking here is how reserved the sound these guys have got is, it’s heavy and powerful without becoming over bearing, allowing all of the different elements to work together to form a track in which you can hear everything that is going on. As the sludgy mix continues over a galloping drum beat you can’t help but be drawn into the mix, initially just nodding along but before long finding yourself singing along, this is seriously infectious stuff and it’s good to hear! Finishing on a high, I found myself really struck by the sound these guys have got, it’s carefully crafted yet almost raw in its sound, it’s a clever mix and one which I think a lot of people are going to respond to.
California Maid follows on and immediately calms everything down, opening over a solid bass line before adding in a soft guitar line over a gentle yet effective drum beat. The vocals adopt a haunting approach here, almost faded in to the background yet pushing the track onwards and allowing it to fully form. There’s something very laid back about this track, something which makes you want to listen to this when the sun is shining and you’re just kicking back enjoying it. Throwing in a RHCP style catchy chorus for good measure, this is one which is built for those chilled out moments in life, driving on a sunny day with friends, kicking back in the sun and generally just relaxing, it’s a clever mix and it works well.
I like the sound of The Deli’s Mix, they’ve shown in two tracks what a lot of bands can’t do in entire albums – that they’re a band capable of different styles. The tracks are well put together but don’t rely on production to make them sound clean, instead keeping the sound of the band real and allowing you to embrace it fully, the whole thing basically giving you moments to sit back and just absorb the music. In all, this is just two tracks, I can’t wait to hear more from them!
