The Edge Of Paradise - NEW TRACK!
You may recall we featured The Edge Of Paradise a while back, and when we did, we loved what we heard. These guys are out there producing music full of intricate hooks, melodies which will get you involved, and riffs which will satisfy that heavy urge deep within you. Based on all of this, when Dave dropped me a line the other day letting me know about their spanking new track Break Away, I was most interested to see what they’d been up to. Mixed by Michael Wagener (yeah that Michael Wagener), the track carries the underlying theme of ‘Perfect Shade Of Black’, exploring the survival of humanity and the idea that we will bring ourselves back to the primal state of existence and rise again from the dark – which again, sounds pretty cool to me! I figured the best way to know what was going on was to kick back, hit play and check things out for myself!
Kicking into an immediate hit of heavy guitars combined with intricate lead lines, the track kicks into being with a roar and immediately reminds us of why Edge Of Paradise are such a memorable band. As the vocals come into being from Margarita we’re led by the hand through the story, the hard hitting yet somehow soothing vocals leading the way whilst the heavy and powerful backing music builds on the mix to fully complete it. Catchy, distorted and in your face, anyone who isn’t singing along with ‘I’ll break away’ after a couple of listens simply has no taste in music, this is a track which is going to work its way into your inner thoughts and stay there. Catchy hooks, soaring guitar lines and enough power to sink a power metal band, this new track signals a new beginning from The Edge Of Paradise, and it sounds damned good!
I was impressed at the ability of The Edge Of Paradise when we first checked them out, and listening to them now it’s clear that they’re still working, developing and building on their abilities. This new track continues the mission they began before, but takes things to a whole new level, resulting in a sound which is big, dramatic and powerful, and one which is sure to set them up a slot as a band to make sure you keep an eye on!

The Edge of Paradise
Having featured these guys before (see below), they were kind enough to not only send me through a full copy of their album (and sign it!) but also a t-shirt – all the way from LA. As such, I figured it was only right to check out the other tracks on the album to see how they stood up against the ones before!
We Breathe is the first of the tracks on the album which weren’t covered before, another track which opens with more of those incredible sludgy guitar lines before ushering in an Alice Cooper/Rob Zombie style riff which will simply make you sit back in your seat questioning how the hell they achieve such a powerful sound. The vocals are once again clean yet powerful on this track, soaring over the musical backing and adding in a whole new dimension of downright dirty rock music, all grabbing your attention and making you want to hear more and more. Funky, distorted and engaging, this is a track which once again acts as testament to the ability of this band as a whole to craft a track which you want to hear more of, you want to know what comes next and you want to know how the hell they do it – simply – it’s a triumph.
Thrown It All Away seems almost a shock as it comes into being after the massive sound of We Breathe, opening almost faded with a plinky guitar line of rolling snares – it’s a trap though. Keeping things quiet to make you turn up the volume, soon enough you’re launched fully back into a mix of distorted guitars, hammering guitar lines and more soaring vocal lines. This track is once again almost a summary of the sound these guys can create as a unit, forcing every single element down your ears and making you sit up and listen. I Come In Peace on the other hand doesn’t offer up any pretence or slow beginning, it just launches straight into a faded out funky riff before kicking into an almost industrial styled track of sludgy guitars, hammering drums and bass heavy licks which will shake your floor boards to the foundations. Keeping everything dark and distorted, there are no vocals here to elevate the track so this is pure darkness, no light, no melody to pull you out – just distorted sludgy riffs – yet it still works.
Fire finishes the album in a way which is hard to put into words – so let me try the following – if you are a guitarist then you will either love or hate this song – it’s that simple. Personally, I’m on both sides of the fence here – I love the track but hate the fact that there is no way I’ll ever be able to play like this – but there we go! Another funk tinged track full of harmonic guitar and bass, full to the brim with downright dirty rock licks, this is awesomeness burned onto a CD.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, but I’m a huge fan of The Edge of Paradise, their music is quite simply some of the most well written tracks I’ve come across in a long while and you can’t help but fall in love with them as you hear their tracks played out. I for one will be looking forward to hearing what comes next from these guys as I think it’s going to be quite exciting to behold!

We were recently contacted by Edge Of Paradise, a Metal band all the way from LA. The female fronted 4 piece band have just released their debut album Mask and are now getting out there to get it heard, and as such I figured the least we could do was check it out and see what we thought! Stating that the lead singer, Margarita Monet, delivers potent yet melodic vocals as well as keys that adds a unique classical flair, Dave Bates on guitar who adds in compelling leads and bombastic riffs as well as Gregg Bissonette (who has drummed for David Lee Roth amongst others) and Tony Franklin (who has played bass for the likes of Glenn Hughes) – this is already sounding like a winning recipe to me!
Opening the selection is Falling Down, a track which immediately grabs your attention with the bass heavy solid mix thrown at you – there’s a heavy bass line, sludgy riffs and hammering drums all going on before the powerful vocals come in to take the lead. The track itself sounds disjointed at first but soon assumes a form which gets you moving and makes you want to hear more at the loudest possible volume! What’s really striking here is the sheer power of the vocals, they’re awesome and can achieve notes which most singers wouldn’t even attempt. Pinch harmonics, drum rolls, slamming riffs, lead lines, bass rhythms heavy enough to shake you to the core – it’s all there on this track, my god this is one hell of an introduction to a band! As the track came to a close I found myself almost breathless, wondering how I was going to survive this review as this stuff is so full on!
Title track Mask follows on, another track full of sludgy riffs and hammering bass lines, what I really like is how they’ve managed to achieve an almost grunge sort of sound to their music (akin the likes of Sound Garden in its progression) yet it’s far more hard hitting and powerful than grunge ever was. The track is once again set at a relatively steady pace, but this further develops the track into something which you feel you can move to – it’s not ‘mosh’ music but music which makes you want to get out there enjoy it. Catchy throughout, this track has to be a single off of this album, it seems to showcase every single element of the band and make you want to hear more of what they’ve got to offer, it’s quite simply a triumph. As it fades and Walk The Line comes into being everything seems to slow down a notch, adopting a very Southern Rock feeling to the beat and the way the riffs are hammered out. This track is testament to how able these guys are to alter their own style to cater for the tracks they want to write. More pinch harmonics fuel the already soaring vocal lines, this time adding in further backing vocals to really accentuate what’s going on. If I had to choose a favourite from the selection here as well it would be this track, I just love how it progresses and changes from one step to the next.
Tail Of The Gun comes up next (although it’s only a sample), a track full of hammering guitar riffs and toned down vocals which move from low almost spoken lines right up to those awesome highs which Margarita can achieve. Catchy (and I guess possibly more stereotypically rock) throughout, this is a track which is sure to absolutely slay on the live scene, it’s got the perfect mix of heavy and melody – you want to hear this track believe me! Shredenstein closes the selection on the bands facebook page, a track which (as the name suggests) is full of hammering guitar riffs and soaring lead lines and is a remake of Edgar Winter’s Frankenstein. If you want a track which is going to destroy an inkling you ever had that you were a good guitarist, then this is it. I know now that the three guitars sat in the corner of the room are going to be sat there until I can play like this….and that could take a while! What a closing to a selection, quite simply phenomenal!
When I saw the post from Edge of Paradise I didn’t really know what to think, their profile picture on the book of face really didn’t give a lot away about what I was in for. What I’ve heard though is a band who can craft tracks which are quite simply mind blowing. Their musical style is heavy yet always melodic meaning at no point do you question what’s going on, you’re always engaged and working alongside the band wanting to hear more and more. Based on the tracks I’ve head on their page I think these guys could well be on the road to the big time, they’ve got the sound and image to achieve it so with a little bit of attention, these guys are going to be coming to a stage near you very soon – and I for one can’t wait! Final word – more please…
