The Erotics
Big D from Noize Level Critical was good enough to send us through some details about The Erotics, a 3 piece rock/classic rock/punk band from Albany New York. Ever the helpful types, I got on to have a listen to what was on offer from these guys. Featuring numerous tracks on their FB page I’ve simply picked the first 5 tracks to feature for the purposes of this review, but there are loads more there to choose from!
Opening with Death With A Heartbeat, your ears are suddenly filled with pounding drums, sludgy guitar licks and almost soothing vocals, old skool rock immediately springs to mind – and as the scream sounds and the track takes form this is confirmed. Funky, dirty and all based on the progressing guitar riff, this is a downright dirty track which grabs you by the face and makes you want to move along with the band. What I really like on this track is how the vocals range from almost soothingly clean through to the gravelly roars which grab your attention, the whole mix ends up as something which you can’t help but want to be involved with, you want to hear what comes next and when it arrives, it’s more than satisfying! Throwing a solo into the mix for good measure, what you’re left with here is a solid rock track, and one which you’ll come back to again and again.
Your Bloody Frankenstein follows on at number 2 on the selection here, another track which opens surrounding the guitar riff and then gets powered on by the simple yet effective drum beat. The vocals are once again kept gravelly, pulling your attention in and making you sing along after a couple of listens. Keeping the form relatively simple throughout, this is a no frills rock track, and do you know what, it’s awesome! Blast Off is a track of much the same form, again opening as it means to go on and not really allowing any dust to settle at all. The track is once again full to the brim with catchy guitar hooks, roaring vocal lines and pounding drums, the whole mix forming together into something which will pull you in and not let you go until they’re done. Give it a couple of listens and you too will be chanting along to ‘blast off’ whilst strutting around the front room, but as you listen it becomes ever more clear that this is a track for the live scene, this is perfect for a dark and dingy hall full of fans all chanting along with the band, and what’s more you want to be there! (Or at least I do!)
She Sucks The Life comes in at number 3, a far funkier track which is bound to have you moving after a couple of listens, there’s just something about it which you can’t help but love! More sludgy distorted riffs pound away here whilst the occasional live snippet is thrown into the mix to make sure you’re still there and listening, the whole mix coming together to form what can simply be described as a downright awesome sleazy rock track, make sure you listen to this one! As the final track (for the purposes of this review) comes in to being in the form of Over My Dead Body, everything once again adopts a roaring pace and powers onwards. I felt almost disappointed when listening to this track as I knew it was going to be the last one I was going to talk about, yet there’s so much more to give. This track seems to showcase the bands more accessibly punk side, keeping the track catchy and dirty throughout, once again encouraging you to join in singing ‘fallin’ over my dead body again’ and getting you out of your seat and moving. Testament to the bands ability, this is another well crafted and mastered track, in all leaving me with no doubt that this is a band which a lot of people are going to enjoy hearing!
I’m generally a bit wary of the sleazy style of rock as a lot of the time you find that bands are doing it for the sake of it, almost as they figured it would get them a lot of girls or something! These guys on the other hand have managed to create tracks which showcase that style of music (and well) whilst keeping the real rock and punk edge there and making you want to hear more. Their music is perfectly suited to the live scene and I for one would love to get out there to see how they handle the stage, based on this I think it’s going to be pretty damned awesome! Highly recommended!
