The Gentlemen of Distorted Sound
We were recently advised to check out The Gentlemen of Distorted Sound by Maria who sent us the likes of Revolter. Always on the look out for new bands to feature, we figured we should probably check these guys out to see what was on offer. The band hails from the London/South East area and say their music is Rock/Classic Rock/Hard Rock – which all sounds pretty good to me!
Opening the selection with Spirit Woman, immediately your hammered with soaring guitar lines and pounding drums before the gravelly vocals take the lead. This track is pure downright dirty rock and it’s done damned well! The guitars, bass and drums all pound away behind the vocal line creating a sound which is massive enough to shake the foundations of your house, the whole mix coming together to form a track which is not only hard hitting but also accessible and very easy to keep listening to. What I particularly liked about this track was how the guitars changed as the song evolved, they alternate between downright sludgy and distorted to almost cleaned up soaring lines, it’s a great mix and elevates the song. Almost catchy through the vocals, this is a track which, as an introduction to a band, does exactly what it says on the tin – but does it well.
Rise continues this theme as it kicks in, opening with some hammering guitar lines before kicking into an almost funky type section of simple drums but hammering guitars. The vocals are almost spoken on this track which really breaks it down into raw elements, this time causing you to listen in just to make sure you’ve not missed anything. The slide guitar effect on the guitar on this track also adds a Southern style edge, but once again you’re soon launched into a pure classic rock chorus which you’re bound to be singing along to after a couple of listens! As the track comes to a close and Electric comes into being, everything seems to slow down a notch and gets layered down to the most basic of elements. The spoken lyrics on this track once again lure you in and make you listen before kicking into a roaring chorus which once again is sure to have you singing along. This is a track which seems perfectly crafted for the live scene, it’s got the right mix of melody to get people singing along, and heavy to have them moving along with the band.
Beautiful Face For Evil is a bit of a contrast to the tracks before it, the sound is much more gravelly and less distorted than on the previous tracks. It almost catches you off guard as it kicks into a classic rock style drum and vocal combination, before launching into a hard rock section of roaring vocals and pounding guitar lines. This is another track which is sure to slay live crowds on the live scene, it’s just perfect. If I had to choose a favourite from the selection their Facebook page then I’d also say this is it, a great track throughout! The Gods follows on and almost catches you off guard once again, this time opening sounding melodic and almost ballady after the last few tracks. The guitars are lower in the mix on this track and the vocals seem to take the lead through the track, telling a tale to keep you engaged and listening until the second it comes to a close. What I really liked here is the way that the vocals are almost spat out, forcing you to listen whether you’re ready for it or not. This approach then changes into a far more harmonic approach to back up the insanely massive sound created during the chorus – all I can really say about this track is wow – what a song.
La Grange (Shinin On) is a far more classic rock track due to it’s old skool roots – but this version seems almost more hard hitting than the original, definitely one to make sure to check out – the band have managed to combine ZZ Top with Grand Funk Railroad and made it work….woah! As the track closes and final track Breathe comes into close proceedings on the FB page you’re treated to one last snippet of just what this band can do. The guitars are distorted and soaringly melodic, the vocals gravelly and hard once again and the drums and bass back everything up perfectly – it’s the perfect closing to a selection from my point of view.
I didn’t know what to expect from a band called The Gentlemen of Distorted Sound, but what I’ve found is a band who have all of the qualities of a classic rock band paired with a new age rock band meaning you’re constantly recognising snippets yet the band are always developing their own sound. Accomplished throughout, this is a band who I think you’re going to be hearing more of very soon – so get on and check them out!
