The Holy Ghost Explosion
Irish band The Holy Ghost Explosion recently dropped us a line to let us know about their latest single, Mrs Peaches, from their forthcoming EP due out this summer. Formed in October of 2011 with the view of mixing loud dirty guitar riffs with melodic leads and relentless drum bashing, the band have set out to achieve world domination – so will they achieve it?
Based on the sound of Mrs Peaches, quite possibly yes! Funky yet raw and unrefined, this track opens sounding like an old skool grunge band, crafting a sound which is going to remind us all why it was we started listening to rock music. Powerful and creative throughout, this is the sort of track which is going to get live crowds whipped into a frenzy, making people love what they’re hearing and demanding more. There’s a catchy edge to things here somehow, despite the lyrical content (don’t play around children!) which adds further to the idea that this is going to pull you in, making you fall for the unconventional progression which the band have opted for and managed to pull off. Despite the odd progression and raw sound to the music, this is a track which is going to get these guys some serious recognition!
Wolves is another release from the band and seems to show off an ability to chop and change their styles depending on what they want to achieve, this time including far more melody and rhythm through things. Kept interesting through the gravelly vocal line and matching guitar work, the syncopated moments of the chorus serve to further develop this track, adding in a sense of the unknown and making you want to know what’s going to come next from the band. Keeping that odd sense of catchiness running through things, this is another track which is going to make you want to know what the rest of the EP is going to hold and whether they’re going to continue this style throughout, it’s a cleverly mixed style the band have achieved. It’s almost a shock then when Wired Religion comes in, opening with soft acoustic lines and restrained vocals. The mix here is much more refined and chilled out at first, but soon resumes the frantic all out approach of the earlier tracks. Still demonstrating their ability to be versatile, this track ends but leaves me wanting to know more, and what’s going to come next!
The Holy Ghost Explosion have a sound which has been done before, yet they seem to have made it their own – something which I should also add they’ve done well! There’s a real sense of catchy accessibility through the music despite the raw power, and this is something which is going to stand these guys in good stead moving forward. Personally, I can’t wait to hear the final EP when it’s done – please just stick to this recipe guys!
